All right, we have had many threads over who makes the best CD Burners. I think ONE thread about who makes the best dvd-rom drives is in order.

Now this is only for DVD READERS, not Burners.

I think that, without a doubght, Lite-On makes the best DVD-ROM drives. They have excellent performance compared to other drives.

Hi there, I am having a couple of problems with my Plextor PlexCombo 320A:

1. All of a sudden it won't recognize the odd DVD (and these are proper ones I've purchased). It just won't play them and sometimes clicking on the drive in Windows Explorer you just get some message about an I/O error or something when the DVD is in the drive.

2. I can't upgrade my firmware. When I run the update ...

What's the difference between the 165H and the 166S?

There are very few online stores in Australia that sell the 166S - most sell only the 165H. A couple, however, list the LiteOn 16x DVD-ROM as 165H/166S. What gives?

EDIT: Thanks to vbl117, I finally found the official website that lists these drives - JLMS, not LiteOn. The trouble is, they use the same page to describe each drive. No answer there.

I have the latest firmware(from Dell) for my Dell/NEC 5800A 16X DVD. I saw on the firmware page that there are 2 other firmwares for the 5800A. If someone can tell me what exactly these firmwares update that would be great.

If you guys know any tweaking I can do to my DVD drive, let me know.

How come when I insert a DVD Movie, and try to test the transfer speed with CdSpeed, I get this error message: READ OF SCRAMBLED SECTOR WITHOUT AUTHENTICATION (056F03) .

Its just that when i read the reviews, sites clearly show the transfer rate performance with movies and dual layer movies.

I have installed the adaptec aspi 4.6 drivers to be able to rip DVD movies. I have successfully ripped DVD movies also.

How fast do y'all rip your DVDs with the 166s?

Mine has come out around 8.1x when ripping StarWars Episode II...

Further, it sounds almost like the "CD Burning" sound when it's ripping...makes almost a weird "buzzing" sound...strange, for I've never heard this coming out of my drive before.

I'm using DVD Decrypter, and ripping into ISO Format.

Any input? :-?

I have a Sony DDU-1612, which as I've read in this forum is really a Liteon LTD-166S.

While making an image w/ CloneCD I suddenly got a report in the log that the drive isn't hardware-compatible w/ a CloneCD feature, I believe it was fast error skip.

Does that mean the LTD-166S is also not 100% CCD-compatible?

It would surprise me, since the Liteon has pretty much been praised here as far as I've read.
