News of DVD Writers

Hi all. Trying to get some info on my new install of a 1620 drive. Have some questions:

1) Do I replace one of the LO drives or add the new drive to the existing setup?

2) What software to use?

3) What Media ( Brand Names vs Mfg coatings)?

System is:

Asus P4P800P
2.8G P4
512M PC3200
(3) Maxtor 800G SATA drives
OP'S 2 drives on XP-Pro,1 drive using Linux 10.1
(2) LightOn 52246 ...

When do you think we will see more drives taking advantage of the Serial ATA interface?

I am looking forward to drives from the mainstream producers like LG, NEC, Mitsumi, etc.

The Plextor PX-712SA looks nice but its expensive and is outgunned feature wise by lower priced drives capable of DL recording and 16x speeds.

Alright, so a couple of weeks back, my LG GSA-4081B started flipping out on me. I still had warranty on it, so I took it back, and asked them to replace it. So what happens? Drive is LG GSA-4082B with A208 firmware.
Disc is RITEKG05, DVD-R
Nero InfoTool shows that it's supported speeds are 4x-8x, and I've tried using both Alcohol 120% and Nero 6 to burn these discs, but the maximum speed i get is 4x.
I've made sure buffer was sufficient, with different hard drives feeding info to the burner, but it never gets past 4x.
I can't find any new firmware, so is there another program ...

Besides the software, screws, cable & box - is there any other differences between the Retail & OEM versions ??

ie: Warranty differences, Firmware, Buffer sizes etc... ???

I just got a new notebook, the Averatec 3250HX. It features a QSI sdw-082s DVD+/-RW drive. I can't find a firmware upgrade anywhere for this drive. QSI simply states they don't release firmware to end users. BTW, the drive is pretty good so far. Any thoughts appreciated.
