Plextor Premium + US CD-RWs...24x Only?!?!

Postby dolphinius_rex on Mon Sep 01, 2003 1:25 pm

I've now tried 2 different types of 24x USCD-RWs on my Plextor Premium, and both discs only show up as being able to be burned at 24x... Has anyone gotten to the Plextor Premium to burn USCD-RW media at <24x??

So far I've tried with:

Melody Branded 24x CD-RWs:
Code: Select all
        Drive Type = CD-RW
         Disc Type = ULTRA SPEED CD-RW 24X
           Lead In = 97:25:31
          Lead Out = 79:59:74
  Nominal Capacity = 702.83MB (79m 59s 74f/LBA:359849)
Manufacturer Maybe = Infodisc Technology Co., Ltd.
Smart-Burn Speed Limit = Wrt(24X),Rd(40X)

and

Verbatim DataLife Plus branded 24x-CD-RWs:
Code: Select all
        Drive Type = CD-RW
         Disc Type = ULTRA SPEED CD-RW 24X
           Lead In = 97:34:24
          Lead Out = 74:43:00
  Nominal Capacity = 656.40MB (74m 43s 00f/LBA:336075)
Manufacturer Maybe = Mitsubishi Chemicals Corporation
Smart-Burn Speed Limit = Wrt(24X),Rd(40X)

I also own a plextor premium with 32x re-write capability

I have read some information stating that the drive is only capable of running rw speeds of 24x while using the current firmware

New firmware will be available in the future

More information regarding this issue at the plextor website:

http://www.plextor.com/english/support/faqs/HW00022.htm

and ultra speed media can't be burned under its specification also (plextor drives speed adjust algorithm is set to burn ultra speed at 24x only {if the media can})

I just e-mailed their tech support and that was one of the questions I asked them. Hopefully I'll get an answer soon and will be able to let people know :D

You can re-write at 32x with the 1.03 firmware.

Surely you mean >24X? And I thought you couldn't burn @ 32X on a 24X RW disc?

Nope, I mean I can't burn a USCD-RW slower then 24x. So when I pop in my 24x CD-RW I have one choice: 24x. I don't have the option to burn at 16x or 20x like I was expecting.

I would have been nice the other way :D but alas no.

I am looking forward to UltraSpeed+ CD-RWs though...although I kinda wish they had come up with a better name for them then UltraSpeed+...
