Im all over that hard drive deal :) I have another xbox crying for a 120. Anyway does TDK still use Ricoh for the dvd+rs? Who makes the 8X drive on sale too?

They've started using CMC's in their spindles, but those 10 packs are probably still Ricoh. Their 8x/4x drive is based on a Plextor and the 8x/8x drive is NEC.

Ian,
Are you saying that this:
I/OMagic 8x DVD+/-RW Drive - $89.94 No rebates!
is a Plextor?

If not then what are you saying? :-?

No, wicked1 was asking about TDK's drive (at least that's what I'm guessing).

The I/OMagic is either an OptoRite or BTC.

If Staples has the same TDK discs as Micro Center, those DVD-R's will be RITEKG04's. Yes, I know it says 2x, but some of thier 2x DVD-R's are RITEKG04. I'll go pick some up...Oh wait, they haven't opened shop yet in the metro area, so I can't. Off to meritline for just about the same prices anyways, LOL. Seriously though hox, you guys need to open up in the metro area, Rochester, MN is too far and I would never go up there to go to a store, LOL.

Since the store I go to is normally out by the time I get there. What if a person went in tomorrow, and purchased the DVD's for the full price,,(just so as to be sure and get them bought), then returned them within the next few days when they were on sale. Could he get them to match the sale price, or maybe return them and repurchase them for the sale price? I figured you would know the stores policy on tha type of transaction.
thanks,

I picked up one of the IO Magic 8x DVD +/- R& RW drives from Staples today (couldn't resist @$90 + tax). Haven't gotten around to installing it yet, but I did open it up. I was just curious, It says Magicspin on it and says it is manufactured by Top G. Is this drive going to be any good, or is it a clunker that I should return w/o even installing?

It's a BTC. In all honesty, you'd be better off with the OptoRite version.

what seems really weird to me, is that the picture on the box looks exactly like a NEC ND-2500A

Thanks for the info Ian. I returned it to Staples and went to Best Buy to get the Lite-On for $119.99 after rebates. I usually spend the extra bucks to make sure I get stuff from manufacturers that I am familiar with, but I got a little crazy this time. I should have known better. Oh well, at least I know I have a good drive now.
