photos of whales and such...

Postby Robotnik on Mon Feb 16, 2004 8:03 pm

Hi every1,

Over Saturday I went across to Kaikoura in the South Island of New Zealand, a place famous for whale sightings and went on a whale spotting cruise. Here are some pics - all of the whales are sperm whales. I saw four different ones on the day. I was also fortunate enough to see a family of dusky dolphins and a number of low flying albatrosses.

Here's some pics I snapped with my digicam:

I live in Wellington, New Zealand which is in the North Island and getting to the South Island involves a ferry crossing. There's also some pics from the ferry crossing.

WOW!
Amazing photos.
Nice job.
That looks like a great place to go for some sightseeing.

Coincidentally, my gf and I had dinner with her friend and his girlfriend last night, and they showed us photos of a trip they took to one (or more) of the Hawaiian islands last fall.
They took photos of volcanos, molten lava etc. They did a lot of sightseeing, like you did.
Some of the shots were amazing, just like yours.

Maybe someone is telling me what kind of vacation my next one should be. :)

Nice!

Did you have any trouble getting back to Wellington considering the weather that you had the past few days?

Am I the only one that wants to eat whale? I seriously just want a whale buffet where you can walk around to a bunch of whales and cut off a whale steak and eat it. There would be whale sauce all around. I would use the things they use to strain food with as brooms. Man, that'd be a good restaurant.

(Anyone else remember when Ian stopped at Comp USA on the way to a wedding to pick up an LTR-52246S?)

Not me personally, I missed the bad weather on my trip back Saturday night. The storm didn't hit until quite late on Saturday. My girlfriend who stayed behind to see some friends and then was supposed to catch a sailing of the ferry across the strait on Sunday certainly did though. She was delayed by something like a day and a half.

The meat of certain whales is supposed to be very tastey, so I've heard. Not at all "fishy" - whales being mammals of course, but rather something like lamb.

Oh my god. A 10 ton lamb?!?! That would be considered a worthy sacrifice to wash away sins for years! Why wasn't Jesus a whale?

Just talked to my grandad, who had some whale meat during WWII, when there was rationing. Apparently the meat's closer to tasting like beef, and if you age the blubber, it can be kinda crunchy and tastes like cheese!
