What is the easiest way to back up the DVD on the HDD?
Do we need to overcome any protection barriers? In that case what do we do?

Research DVD Decrypter. It will do what you want.

dvd decrypter is good for starters, i recommend also dvd shrink

DVD Decrypter-> make an ISO-> mount the iso with daemon tools.
