Exchange slow LiteOn 52327S for what?

Postby ronross on Fri Mar 05, 2004 1:15 pm

OK, so 68 people viewed my last post about my slooow 52327S without replying and I've since found out that my drive is a new one lacking eeprom and there's no updated firmware yet. Clearly the drive is not performing since it averages 24x on DAE while cdrlabs test averaged something like 37x. I'm not inclined to wait for a firmware update and hope for the best: life's too short.

So my experiment with LiteOn has gone awry and I want to exchange the drive for something else. I'll spend up to the cost of the basic Plextor if necessary (haven't researched what the Premium offers over and above).

What's a good alternative available at Newegg for between $30-50?

Thanks, Ron.

I've had bad experiences with AOpen drives in the past; my Lite-On drives have always been better (including both of my 52327Ss). I'd recommend that you keep the drive for now (I've replied to your other thread with some tips), and if those don't help, exchange your drive for another 52327S.

I have yet to find a good CD Burner in the $50 and under price range. Only one that meets with my seal of approval is the Plextor Premium. Other things that have my seal of approval:

Pioneer DVD-ROM's
Plextor PX-708A
South African Airways
1time Airines (have yet to fly them, but looks nice)
UPS
DHL/Airborne

On a more serious note. Exchange the LTR-52327S, the build quality on Lite-On drives is terrible, the worst around, but in the case of the LTR-52327S, once you find a working one, it will work quite well.

While Lite-On drives certainly aren't built as well as Plextor, I'm not sure why you say that they are the worst. I don't think that I've been particularly lucky, and none of the three LTR-52327Ss that I've installed (two for me, one for someone else) have had problems. Actually, I usually end up breaking or finding defects in more parts than most people, as I work my computers very hard, so I'd be surprised to have not discovered a defect in my 52327Ss so far if they were really that bad.

I'd rather have one 52327S than 3 Plextors.

I'd rather have 3 LiteON 52327S drive then 1 Plextor... they're about the same price that way

Just wondering what you think might be "defective" about this drive that a swap would solve? If I'm going to the trouble to send it back to newegg and the second one works the same, I'd be better off just paying more for a Plextor now.

Ironically, if newegg were still selling the 48x version of the LiteOn, I'd just get it and be done, but they don't.

Take a look at the ASUS CRW-5232AS. The QuieTrack version if you can find it. The drive smokes.

Yeah, I have a couple of them here. Probably the best CD-RW ASUS has put out so far

working on a review?

also, do you find that it's in the same class as the Lite-On LTR-52327S ?
