Burning software have any impact on quality of burn?

Postby vallybally on Sat Mar 13, 2004 2:46 pm

Hi guys, I'm new here and have a fairly simple question: Does the burning software have any impact on simply the quality of the burn?

I have an NEC 2500A with Maxell (MXL RG02) DVD-R media. Win XP. I have the option of burning 200 gigs of data either by Nero Express 5.5.x or Roxio 6.2.x. Not sure which to use for the long haul, as they both turned out a readable disc... (is Nero Express just Nero without the advanced features? ie it burns the same?)

As long as there are no bugs, they should all burn CDs with the same quality. In other words, it is the drive (and the media) that determines the burn quality, not the software.

Nero Express is, in fact, the same as Nero. They are the exact same program with different features exposed according to the serial number you enter.

that's because you got an OEM Nero. the serial number is already "built in". it is in the registry.
most likely this Nero won't work with other drives than the one it came with.

however the actual program is the same as the full retail version. if you buy a serial key you enter it into the same program you already have installed on your computer, but the program will behave differently. you'll have the full Nero, not just the Express mode. and it will work will all burners.

Ah, I got ya. So can you edit the nero registry with a serial # and then it becomes fully functional on all burners non-express version?

How about my original question, do you think the burning software makes a difference or not really?

yes, but there's no need to edit the registry.
in the main Nero Express window, click on the ? button, one of the options is "Enter new serial number".
of course you need to purchase that serial number first.

as for your original question, cfitz answered it just fine :) i've nothing more to add.

From all I've read then on websites, it seems Nero is 5x more popular largely due to it's advanced features over Roxio, nothing more?

Dear vallybally,
Nero 5X offers more control over what you are burning, while Roxio's software does that in background. You can change lot of settings when you are using Roxio.Nero is good and so is Roxio.
