Tool for identifying manufacturer of pressed media?

Postby Coyote on Wed Mar 17, 2004 1:36 am

I've been having some issues with some games I bought lately, and have heard that the publisher may have used poor quality media. Is there any tool that can show me the quality and/or manufacturer of pressed cd's?

K-Probe and a LiteON CD burner will let you know the quality of the disc... but generaly speaking pressed discs are fairly good quality. As for discerning who actually manufactured the discs, you have about 0.01% of a chance of succeeding. Every disc manufacturing plant has different markers to discern their discs from others, but unless you work with the plant, or *in* the plant, you won't be able to make heads or tails of them. I work in the media pressing industry myself, and I can only recognize the top 5 or so CD manufacturing plants' pressed discs in Canada, and there are still a bunch of smaller plants I know nothing about. The U.S. has *LOT'S* of different plants, and let's not forget all the illegal non-registered ones that are all over Mexico, China, Taiwan, Hongkong, and other places.

....so, like I said, about 0.01% of a chance. Sorry!
