MSI CDRW Probs :(

Hi guys and gals I'm having some probs (as you've probably guessed) and I've been sent here from the IANAG forums because you lot are supposed to be good

OK, here we go:

My specs:
AMD Athlon XP2000+
ECS K7S5A
2x 128mb generic PC2100 DDR
Geforce 2 MX400 64mb
MSI CD-RW ms-8348 (CR-48A) 48x16x48x
Samsung DVD-ROM SD-616Q
Win XP Pro + Win 98SE (Dual boot)

I'm having some serious problems with my CD writer. Every time I try to burn a CD, it stops responding completely. If I manage to get a CD burned, I can't do any more without restarting windows (either version). The maximum I can write a CDR is 12x, and the max for a CDRW is 4x. It's been like this since day one, but unfortunately the shop I bought it from went bust. Without thinking, I threw out the receipt, so I have no proof of when I bought the drive. I've reinstalled both versions of windows, tried the drive in another machine (win 98SE), and updated the firmware through the MSI site, but none of this has helped.

Is there anything I can do to fix this? Thanks in advance for any help

For some reason it's saying that my CDRW can write at a maximum of 16X, but when I first bought it, I could write faster than that.

try uninstalling the Secondary IDE channel (where your CD-R/W drive is located) and reboot.

did you have Easy CD Creator and/or DirectCD installed on your system before?

also in InfoTool, in the ASPI tab, what does it say? what ASPI layers do you have and are they OK?

i see you have InCD. this is known to cause trouble sometimes.
though not a first thing to do, it might be wothwhile to see what happens if you uninstall InCD, if that improves things.
maybe you update to the latest version of InCD - 3.52.40 although it might be hard to find since it's not on ahead's website anymore, you'll have to find it elsewhere on the net.

That's all I can find for that. I'm gonna try uninstalling InCD and the secondary channel now to see if that helps, but I'm going away for the weekend, so I won't be able to post the results for a few days.

The Aspi tab says:

when you click the ASPI tab, you have a pull-down menu that says what ASPI layers you have. but at the bottom of the InfoTool window it should say if the ASPI layer is installed and woking properly, or not. that's what i wanted to know - if your ASPI layer is OK. check it again.

Hmm I have had that drive for almost a year with no problems, only like 1 coaster out of almost 100. Are you sure you got the right firmware? There is a newer firmware 160d that you might want to flash too, i don't know how much that will help though.
