How sucks is CMC?

Many people says CMC CDR are sucks, but I have got some Khypermedia and Imation CDRs from CMC. They burn well in my LTR-52327S QS0C, althougt in max speed. I'd want to know how sucks is CMC.

Ask my spindle of 100 Imation CMC CDRs of which about 75% wouldn't burn properly (they just blew up in the midst of burning with sense errors, not even fail a very or something!)

When I contacted Imation tech support, they didn't seem particularly surprised. I didn't bother getting them replaced cause I didn't want another CMC disc near my burner.

But the quantity test C1 max average is 2-3, sometimes 1, and no C2 error in my burner...

CMC media varies a lot. While the media from Imation used to be pretty good, others like the KHypermedia stuff is absolute junk.

Amen! I will not ever knowingly buy CMC's again. The only usable batch I've encountered were some Fujitsu-Siemens cheapies I mentioned here: http://www.cdrlabs.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?p=87916#87916.

All others were rotten. The worst experience was with Verbatim DataLife's with 2 different batches in the package, one of which was completely unusable.

I've noticed that CMC made black bottomed discs are usually pretty good though. It's the only CMC made product I've ever seen fairly consistant decent results from

Personally, I've never had a problem using CMC discs, regardless of which label they are branded under. I've used Prime Peripherals 16X, AT&T 40X, Spin-X 40X, Imation various speeds, KHypermedia 32X, Memorex various speeds, Precision 40X, and Staples 24X...all CMC, and all burned fine at the rated speed. Just be sure your CD-RW drive burns CMC discs well, refer to this thread for more info.

I haven't had many problems with CMC, either. I've mostly used Imation ones, but I've also used CMCs from Philips and Spin-X, and they were usually OK. There were a few which didn't work well, though, and overall, the error rates on the Philips discs were higher than the error rates on the others.

I have had memorex CMC discs and the top layer slowly flaked off the disc rendering them useless after about 6 months in the car cd holder. TY,Ritek,MCC discs were all fine(some are 3 yrs old) and they all sit in the same CD case.

I had a batch of TDK branded CMC disks.
They definatelly suck.

Problems range from screwing up a burn to longevity. It seems like the longest most of them lasted is 5-7 month.

Any one wants a batch of shiny TDK coasters??? Good for putting drinks on, making disco balls and frisbey's

I have to say I can't remember a CMC disc ever actually fail on me, but they do tend to be temperamental when it comes to reading them back on other devices. The later, higher speed ones are better than the older ones (some of which were truly, truly awful) but still not great.

Longevity is *definitely* an issue. I've had disc-rot on some discs after only a couple of weeks. Princo give me better longevity than CMC, and always have done.

My experience with CMC:
1. With a good burner, such as plextor, they're okay. You will get decent burn quality, with relatively low/medium C1 errors.
2. In using CMC for Audio CD, I always have problems (skipping, etc). The only way I can use CMC as an audio CD perfectly is with Yamaha's Audio master quality recording.

Recommendation: If you find them dirt cheap, then get them. If not, Fuji's TY is much better for your money. If you do have them cheap, they are useful for giving to/sharing with friends.

Due to the mass availability of CMC media from various manufactures, it's hard to avoid them. However, I still use my TY Fujis for actual data backup.

The newer batches of CMC cdrs are indeed quite good.Yup CMC use to have a very bad reputation in the early days but the new rated 48X-52X cdrs are good.They work extremely well with LiteON burners.The region where i come from which is east asia,brands like Imation,Egen,Melody Group are all very common where all of them are made by CMC.I have no problem playing these cdrs in my audio player unlike the Prodiscs and Maxells.

hehe, Don't count Melody in with CMC. Just because they carry the CMC media code, and are made in a CMC plant, the Melody group actually rents time with CMC, and has their own way of making the discs. So you are more likely to get consistant results.

Really true just don't go and use the CMCs for backing up really important stuffs.It's great if you're planning to distribute your recordings or stuffs similar.
Avoid those from Philips though,really bad quality especially at the ending tracks.

I picked up a spindle of their Arra branded discs, and found them to be otherwise. Whilst most burnt fine at 52x, some developed read errors after a month. And, quite a few of the discs in the pack were physically damaged, they had actual scratch marks/holes right through the reflective layer (could have made a good old fashioned pin-hole camera.
