Oxford enclosure & PCMCIA

http://www.macpower.com/productdetails1 ... Enclosures

1) any Feedback if there are any error issues on the above enclosure or a EZSTORE speedzter enclosure

2) MUST THE firwire PCMC IA Card that is connected to this enclosure be oxford chip as well ? any idea if Syba.com or Mercury has less errors

a) http://www.macpower.com/productdetails1 ... 88,316,303

WOULD all the 3 PCMCIA firwire cards be good enough to input DV camera into notebook apart from hooking up to firewire enclosure ?

I did some research on usb/firewire combo enclosures a while back, and that enclosure was not recommended due to reliability issues.

No

There was a time when TI chipset firewire implementations were most recommened for DV transfer. Some others supposedly had trouble with dropping frames from the video stream. I don't know if that is true anymore. In any event, look for one with low CPU utilization.

Thanks , actually the only one I could get hold in my country with Oxford is either

1)

2) .EZSTORE speedzter enclosure . a proprietary assembled brand with Oxford ,
3) ARE there relaibity issues with the drive 1 ) ?..I thought of buying drive 1

4) for PCMCIA firewire ..2 choices between syba.com ( a taiwanese brand that appears more popular) and a mercury brand ( a taiwanese that makes motherboard as well but apparantly is no good ? )

a) which PCMCIA would you buy ?

Oxford doesn't actually make a chip for pcmcia/cardbus adapters, do they? They only make chips for bridgeboards, I believe.

I have two TI based PCI firewire cards, and I get frame drops with one of them, but not the other. On a 3ghz processor no less. I've tried everything and have been unable to diagnose. Yes, I'm using the microsoft codec, and have dma enabled. I only get the frame drops transfering from a sony camcorder, not when reading from a dvd drive in a firewire enclosure.
I also get the same framedrops when I use the motherboard's built in VIA based firewire controller.

The TI based firewire controller that works for me is the ads pyro. The one that is flakey is an adaptec fireconnect 4300.

Stumped

Go figure. :-? Pretty frustrating, isn't it? :( One would like to think that by this time we would be able to reliabily transfer data from a camcorder to a PC...

I wouldn't be surprised if data may be dropped with the dvd drive as well, but somewhere in the protocol stack the loss is recognized and the data sent again. Re-sending data is easy enough to do with spinning discs - just wait for one revolution (not to mention the internal buffers). With a tape, however, there isn't any stopping and backing up to catch that missed data...

So much for paying more to get Adaptec "reliability". I wish I had an answer for you.

The alternative is
2) .EZSTORE speedzter enclosure . a proprietary assembled brand with Oxford ,

b) are there issues with having a syba PCMCIA combo firewire + USB 2.0 card for note book ( Only use that with DVD writer on external casing )
