Yamaha CRW-F1E writing quality

I use my Yamaha CRW-F1E (latest firmware 1.0g) most of the time to rip AudioCDs and burn AudioCDs using Yamaha's Audio master recording feature. Recently, I start using the writer to burn regular data CD. I use a CMC media, and I tested the burn quality using my Lite-on combo drive and Nero's CD-DVD speed. It showed a lot of C1 errors (in the thousands). First, I thought it's the media, but my friend with a plextor, using the same cheap CMC media, produced better result with a lot fewer C1 errors.

Then I tried using Verbatim datalifeplus (MCC). The result was the same, high C1 error in the thousands, while burning the same media with my plextor 48X produced only about 10-15 total C1 error. I tried burning a 3rd verbatim with my yamaha, and CD-speed only went about 1/4 (with thousands of C1 errors), before it gave me an arror and refused to read the CD further.

Anybody experiencing the same problem? Is my Yamaha dying? I really like the drive, especially the audio master and tattoo features. Any help/suggestions is appreciated.

the amount of c1 errors in the thousands is normal

i try to use nice TY cd-rs for all my cd burning needs

i too have the external yamaha crw-f1, although i haven't used it in like months

I tried TY, but same result. Just to see how bad it is, I burn some mp3s using CMC, Verbatim (MCC), and TY media. All of them that were burned using the Yamaha, have problems (skipping, cannot be read) by my CD-MP3 player. Burning with the plextor, even with the CMC media, have no problems at all.

When I mean a lot of C1 errors, I meant a lot. My Lite-on had to spin down in reading the discs. The C1 error goes to thousands as soon as I started the CD-speed, and keep registering errors continously. In contrast, media that were burned with my plextor only gave like 10 errors all the way. Although I understand that C1 errors do happen, the amount produced by my Yamaha is just not good, especially considering the plextor can produce really low errors on same media.

Maybe your drive is failing. I have a F1 too and I dont get bad Kprobe scans of discs burnt in it.

Oh no.... I really like this drive. I wonder if it's because I use the Audio master recording feature a lot....

i don't think that's likely.
however if you want to strech your drive's life expectancy, i recommend you only use it for what you must - burning audio with AMQR.
for ripping use another drive.
