Benq DW822A-OC2: My impressions so far (got it 4/12)

DVD-R/W, DVD+R/RW, DVD-RAM

Postby Jojo on Wed Apr 21, 2004 9:56 pm

Is Nero 6 ultra edition or Nero burning rom 6 compatible with BENQ 822A?

Veff, what program(s) did you use to burn data in your dvd media?

Thanks.

Jojo, I have only tried and used two programs so far, and Nero is not one of them unfortunately.
One is Stomp RecordNow Max, which burns great!
Burners only:
Pioneer DVR-115D
Pioneer DVR-111D
Plextor PX-716A TLA0304
Plextor PX-716A same TLA

LiteOn 52246S (another)

Summary:
BenQ 7.5 mins 3.86GB (.5 min faster then the 2500). the 2 BenQs and 1 2500 (may be more on the thread later) Kprobes (media - YUDEN000T01, MCC03) had a max PI of 12 and PO of 11 and highest average was 1.5.

Admend: he also burned with Prodisc 4x at 8x (65 cents each) and both burned great - BenQ being a 1 min faster Pi max = 6, Po max =4, Po total=52; Nec-2500A - Po total=452.

Thanks vanderlow!

This would appear to confirm what another owner had written (you posted the link) about it being his best DVD writer (out of 6 that he owned) and 8X quality beating other drives' 4X burn quality.
I also like the speed advantage over other (some) 8X drives.

Veff, some more Kprobes on the DW822A some on no name - media (along with Princo) showing it does - media well even if it's at 4x, but Jamos also did a TDK Ricoh JPNR01 4x at 8x and Kprobe is: PI max = 5 avg =0.206, Po max = 3 avg = .009. Pretty sweet graph.

It played back flawlessly.
Looks like the 8X test on 4X Ricoh was successful! :)

PS: I was surprised to see that the Benq 822A OC2's tray is black like my PX-708A drives.
the 800A's tray is black as well..supposed to be better for the laser.

DVD-R Available Speed Issues

Postby hlockman on Sat May 01, 2004 11:57 pm

I have owned the DW822A for a week. The problem I have is this. It won't record properly to DVD-R or DVD-RW media under 4X. If I try to use DVD-R media under 4X it ALWAYS tries to record at 2.4 X as if it was trying to write to DVD+R/RW media. Then, of course, the burn fails. If I use DVD-R 4X media, things work just fine. Has anyone else has this problem? Has anyone been able to burn DVD-R or DVD-RW media at 1X or 2X? I wrote Benq through their website, and one support technician suggested that I call a toll free number to begin an RMA process. But I don't there is really anything wrong with the drive. It sounds to me just like a firmware issue that Benq needs to work out. But if someone else has had success burning media at 1X or 2X then I guess I'm wrong. BTW, I have tried the latest versions of Nero, Alcohol, and a couple other programs. All read the lowest available burn speed as 2.4X.

Anyone who might have any input would be appreciated. Thanks

What media is it? Have you used the program that came with it which I believe is RecordNow? I take it you came had the - 2.4x or did you buy it with the 822A? I ask that because it does well with allot of + and pretty much the main brand name -, but it's know for its + media.

first impression often lies (I hope)

Just got the drive, installed as a master on a Promise Ultra100 (second channel), during bootup it shows as (Ultra DMA 2).

Burned with Nero 6.3 around 4.2 Gb. Nero estimated around 6 minutes and said it was writing at 8x.
It took 33 minutes. The internal read buffer kept constantly changing between 45 and 95 %.

Something is wrong, nero?

sometimes (often?) optical drives don't work well when connected to PCI IDE cards.
connect your drive to the motherboard's IDE connectors.

On mine I'm using 8x + media, set to booktype (for my - media panny ht system) and all is just fine.

I'm using Xcopy for movies I need to split and Pinnacle Instant copy for movies that I can tear down to fit without compression.

What software you guys using anyway?

I also now own a DW822A. The K-Probe results are the best I have ever gotten on +R Ricoh media. The other drives I have used in the last 60 days are 2500A, 107d, 851s, 811s, DD0401.

My DW822A is installed in a USB 2.0 case with InSystems ChipSet. Have also used FireWire. FireWire uses less CPU time.

Use DVDShrink 3.1.7 and than NERO 6 (.10 version-latest) and burn discs in 8 minutes on this setup. Getting the right ChipSet is very, very important in the case. BookType works great with NERO.

I feel the DW822A will be my last drive till the DW1600 comes out and DL has stablized and prices on media come down.
Using Plextor 716UF...
Using BenQ 1620...
Thinking about BenQ 1640...
Would love a BenQ Blu-Ray...
