Yeah, you'll probably need that
Keep in mind, it's basically an IBM drive.

Not bad, though...how much is the MIR? Personally I hate those things, but hey. I still think the 250GB Maxtor for $133 with no rebates is a GREAT deal. If only it were a WD. Sigh. (OK, let's not turn this thread into ANOTHER Maxtor vs WD thread ).

As much as I don't like Maxtor, I'll take a Maxtor over IBM ANY day! Stupid 60GB didn't even last 1 year...

Exactly, Hitachi has many R&D/manufacturing plants outside the U.S. ;)

Were you just saying that to get my attention? ;)

I think Hitachi is probably better than IBM, and that their improvements on the Deskstar line will probably be apparent in another year or two as drives last longer and Hitachi loses IBM's reputation for shoddy reliability and quality-control. Still, I'm going to wait until that reputation is lost for good before I buy one.

hitachi used to be very slow for 3.5" ata area; ibm used to be good but one infamous drive often called deathstar because so many were failed so soon; problem with parking & ibm changed firmware to make drive to spin in idle all the time.
