Notebook DVD Burner

Postby tazdevl on Sat Jun 19, 2004 3:49 pm

Dunno if this is a hot deal, but I've been thinking about buying a DVD burner for my laptop. Came across this and picked one up.

NEC ND-5500A $148

http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDe ... 018&depa=1

4X +R/-R/+RW/-RW 8X DVD 24X16X24 CD (think Newegg has the CDR speed wrong, listed as 16X), don't know if there's MRW support.

Dell uses the 5100A in their notebooks. Mechanically the same thing, but it doesn't support the - format. $230.

Given the difference in price though between the two and Dell is usually inexpensive, seems like a decent deal to me.

I don't know why. If you add RAM to your laptop it doesn't void the warranty.

Well, wouldn't it require opening it up?

Not with every laptop I've owned. If it's a fixed drive it might, but all my computers have a multibay... flick locking switch underneath laptop, pull out old drive, put in new one. Pretty straightforward.

Sent an email to the 'egg asking them for a shot of the back. I think I know what you're thinking Av.

I assume you ordered one, please post back after you've installed and burned a few DVDs. That's a rocking price for a laptop DVD. I have a Dell 1100 with a CDRW, now that I've been burning DVDs, CD-Rs are just too small.

My Dell I9100 came with an NEC ND-6100A which is an 8x DVD+RW writer with 2.4x dual layer write capabilities. It is a modular drive which just pulls out and is very easy to upgrade.
