In House Review - TEAC DV-W58GA 8x DVD±RW

Postby Ian on Thu Jun 24, 2004 12:44 pm

CDRLabs has taken an in depth look at TEAC's new 8x DVD±RW drive, the DV-W58GA. This new drive is capable of 8x DVD±R and 4x DVD±RW writing speeds and has a maximum DVD read speed of 12x. The DV-W58GA also includes features like 40x CD reading and writing speeds, 24x rewriting speeds and support for buffer underrun protection.

In this review we'll take a look at some of the features found on the DV-W58GA and see how it compares to some of the DVD±RW drives from the competition. Can the DV-W58GA deliver the features and performance we've come to expect from TEAC? You'll have to read the review to find out.

Hello!

Nice review, Ian :)

But I´m not impressed, the KProbe-results are not really good and the other DVD-results are not Top.

In the german magazine c´t the Teac have better writing-quality as the LiteOn-originals, but both writers far away from the good writers from LG and Pioneer.

Only the CD-R-results are better than average.
Benq DW 1640 and 1650 , Plextor PX-755, Pioneer BDR-208 and 209D, LG GH24NSC0, LG BH16NS40 and 16NS55, Liteon ihas 124F and 324F, Pioneer DVR-215 and S21, Samsung SH-224DB and 224GB, and some more

Yeah, TEAC really needs to get a firmware update out there for this drive. At least something to put it on par with the Lite-On 812S.

Yikes. Still using U4S2? That's a very old 812S firmware. Like US01 or US03 in age. That probably didn't help much in the quality department.

Also, bitsetting doesn't work with U4S2, like all the 812S firmwares prior to US0J. The booktype utility will say that it worked, but if you actually burn a disc with bitsetting, the disc won't be bitset. In order to get bitsetting to work with U4S2, you'll need to patch the firmware.

Oh well. If Teac isn't good about pestering LiteOn for a new firmware, I guess that's their loss, then. ;)

But in some c´t-reviews the Teac is better with the older FW-version as a LiteOn with newer-FW. Teac doesn´t use FW with 1:1-convert a original Lite-FW, Teac edited it by their own

BS. If Teac was capable of improving Liteon's drives by editing the firmware, then Liteon sould certainly improve their drives as well.

Then tell me why the Teac´s with older FW offer better writing quality as the LiteOn with newer FW

The proper comparison would be Teac's ancient firmware with LiteOn's own ancient firmware (US01/US03).

And there could be other factors. One might be that the LiteOn unit that they got was physically damaged. Unless they compared Teac's old firmware with LiteOn's (spectacular) US0N firmware on the same drive, it is not a fair comparison.

They also could have been made on different assembly lines, in different factories, under different conditions... all which can affect the overall characteristics of a drive.

Hello!

Are the quality differences so high? I wonder that every time the Teac has better writing quality than the original-Liteon.

Other side, the Waitec´s (based on Lite) with older FW than the Lite was more worse than the Lite with newer FW

No matter, what´s the reason, the overall quality of LiteOn-products doen´t reach the average-mark
