Just Bought A07 WHat What media and where to buy ??

Postby pinballnut on Mon Jul 26, 2004 1:46 pm

I just bought a pioneer A07 !
THe question is what media should i Buy -R +R (what are advntages and disadvantages)?
Where does every one buy ther media to get a good deal?
What brand should i buy?

The media is only going to be used for movies i bought 25 8x +R memorex and they seem to be good but expensive at 30.00

Any idea would be great but i really would like to hear from a07 owners
I did upgrade my firmware to 1.18

If you are going to use DVD-R, use firmware 1.16, if you want to use DVD+R, use firmware 1.18.

The Pioneer DVR-107 does not support bitsetting, so if the DVD players you are using your discs on are picky about this, then you may want to use DVD-Rs.

For top quality results, get Maxell or Taiyo Yuden discs. For general cheap use media, I find Optodisc works fairly well, just keep in mind the above firmware warning, since Optodisc DVD-Rs will NOT work on 1.18, and Optodisc 4x DVD+Rs will NOT work on 1.16 :o (I doubt Maxell and Taiyo Yuden will have the same problem though!)

I own an A07 (very good drive) and have used Maxell DVD+R/-R media as well as TDK DVD-RW media (2X). I'm sticking with Maxell and TDK for now but I will also use Verbatim (when available) going forward.

These Prodisks are awesome in the Pioneer 107 using the hacked 1.16FW burning at 8x.

The non printable ones are a little cheaper too.

If you look at the Pioneer website, I'm pretty sure they list the recommended media for the drive. Also, at www.videohelp.com if you look up the drive, users report their experience with many different medias. This should help in your decision process.

What is the best all around FW? I just got an A07 (haven't installed it)... when you say "use 1.16 for -R and 1.18 for +R", does this mean -R writing is somehow messed up in 1.18?

I'm mostly concerned with good -R writing, but I would like to be able to use some of these Fuji (Ricoh) and Ritek +R's I have laying around...

[sorry to sound like a n00b, I hadn't planned on getting this burner til the $69 J&R deal came around...]

It depends on the media you are using... 1.18 seems to screw up DVD-R recording on some media types, but I would suspect that bigger name manufacturers like Taiyo Yuden and Maxell would still be fine.

For better writing on Fuji and Ricohjpn DVD+R deffinatly upgrade to 1.18!

Hrrrm, tough call since I have Fuji/Ricoh +R... I actually accidentally flashed to 1.18 (meant to run the 1.16 updater initially and since I was really tired, ran the wrong one #-o ) but went ahead and my first Maxell -R seemed fine... you're probably right that as long as it's a good brand media, -R should be fine for now...

I'll keep my fingers crossed! :)
