The best results I've seen on most media have almost always come from the NEC 2500a, or the Pioneer DVR-107d.

The NEC 2500a is great with hacked firmware, and the Pioneer DVR-107d is great with regular or hacked firmware.

Frankly if I were buying a drive now I'd get the GSA-4120B simply due to its versatility (8x -R, 12x +R, DL, and -RAM). It's also a pretty good burner to boot, going by all the online reviews.

I'd get the Pioneer DVR-A07. It's a good all-around reader/writer. I'd get the retail version because J&R has it for sale for $69.99 after $40.00 rebate from Pioneer. Shipping is about $5.00. This saves you a few bucks over the OEM version and you get the software.

Shipping to Canada is more then $5.00, and he also has to pay customs on this one => Result: very expensive drive!
