What's a good brand of rewritable DVD's?

DVD-R/W, DVD+R/RW, DVD-RAM

Postby dolphinius_rex on Mon Aug 02, 2004 9:31 pm

Ok, Taiyo Yuden and Mitsubishi make their main business about building and selling optical media technology. Most of their profits come from other companies liscensing this technology. However, both Taiyo Yuden and Mitsubishi continue to manufacturer smaller amounts of media, for sale in the regular market, but it is very expensive, but usually very good quality.

Ritek, CMC, Optodisc, Prodisc, Gigastorage, Princo, Lead Data, MBIL, and Mitsui are big manufacturers, who (are supposed to) license the technology from Mitsuibishi and Taiyo Yuden (some companies just use it and don't pay for it).

Brand names like Maxell, Sony, TDK, JVC, Panasonic, and Pioneer may have manufacturing plants (especially the first 3), but a lot of their media is OEM'd from larger manufacturers, sometimes with a custom stamper so it has their own code and everything.

To find out the disc's ID code, you can download any number of programs. I use LiteON IT's SmartBurn software since it is small and very fast. But some people use programs like DVDInfoPro.

I actually like the DVD Identifier app from CDFreaks, download here. It's small, fast, and gives me all the advanced info that DVDInfoPro does, but no slow software, ad's, or price-tag.

Except that one Ad linking to CDFreaks, which is why I won't use it

Why the animosity?

By the way, I'm working with the DVDIdentifier author to add/test a few new features such as booktype display.

One of the programs looks great (still loking for Liteon) that dolphinius_rex provided but I must say this Identifier from freaks looks
fantastic. I like environment and general looks.

And it is very friendly with DVD-RAM ;)

Thanks.

What's expensive about Taiyo Yuden? Their primary business is not licensing, but making optical media and other things. The average OEM price of Taiyo Yuden CD-R media is US$0.2 and the average OEM price of Taiyo Yuden DVD-R and DVD+R media is from US$1 to US$0.5, closer to the latter now.

Taiyo Yuden has Taiyou Yuden Korea whic is called Hanguk Taeyang Yujon in Korean. The South Korean office only helps Taiyo Yuden to ship OEM to South Korean distributors and does not run media production lines in South Korea. The media are only made in Japan.

Princo and Gigastorage are not big compared to Taiyo Yuden. Ritek has only become a billion-dollar business after year 2000. In 2003 and 2004, Ritek probably produces three times as many CD-R media as Taiyo Yuden. Even Prodisc is far behind CMC and Ritek in total production.

Most statistics about media market share comes from Taiwan. They intentionally say nothing about Japanese market share many times, but I live in place closer to Japan than to Taiwan.

@Volken : Sony CD-R discs are Acer/Benq, atleast here in India. They are very good, burn well in all my Lite-On and LG burners.

Thanks dolphinus_rex and everyone.

Very simple but concrete program, does what it says and works superb :)

...drove a few of the rare media to see who is who in this game.

And here we go :

**
I must say I'm slightly :( TDK media shows Taiyo Yuden :(

I must say this is a big disappointed for me. Nothing wrong with Taiyo Yuden, I just always assumed TDK is proud source for himself :(

**
But...Sony says Sony :)

**
Kodak is Kodak :) (Eastman Kodak company)

**
Ricoh is Ricoh :)

**
BASF is CMC Magnetic Corporation.

**
Verbatim = Mitsubishi Chemicals Corporation

**
Traxdata (very old model) = Kodak !!!! :)

---

Pity, I can't find any That's media.

If someone reads this and lives in France - could you please test any That's CDR or CDRW media to tell us who is real source ( I doubt That's)

According to this (Taiyo Yuden) : http://users.pandora.be/erik.deppe/cdrm ... DR74TY.htm

Also, if anyone has 3M (Scotch) I'm very curious?

Dolphinus_rex and everyone I think you are going to like this - click on each brand >>> http://www.cdmediaworld.com/hardware/cd ... o_fs.shtml

Hm'm I think I will make smalish extensive media faq ;)

Will report what interest me the most who makes my nr.1 (after Max MO) backup media >>> DVD-RAM :)

Night all.

Polaroid CDR media = Multi Media Masters & Machinary !!!!

Where on earth is this maker from ????

According to this : http://www.cdmediaworld.com/hardware/cdrom/3m.shtml 3M media is from TDK !!!

TDK media shows Yuden source and now 3M makes TDK as source ?

Strange priority within TDK brand

That's is Taiyo Yuden's retail brand. I wish I could get them in Germany!

Incidentally, you may want to have a look at this site: http://www.instantinfo.de/ At least in the CDR-section, they have an option for English menus.

I wonder this Commodore fame name is it some remain of original company or someone simply using the name to sale the raw media with more atractive boost with the old fame?

There's an option to show all media either by brand or manufacturer. The information is not complete or completely up to date, but within the scope of what is available, you can check which media is being sold under a given brand. And you can do so before buying it if you find your candidate.

I've found it useful for avoiding, e.g. CMC or to try to find Taiyo Youden.
