Samsung announed 16x DVD writer

Postby Kennyshin on Fri Jul 30, 2004 5:33 am

The articles I could find are all in Korean, one of which is found here.

This is what I posted at CDFreaks Recording Hardware Forum just a while ago about it.

Samsung officially announced 16x DVD writer this week. They are planning to sell them from early August. It's not the first time for Samsung to leap ahead of LG.

Seriously, the only competition Samsung takes seriously is LG.

According to Digital Times of South Korea, year 2004's DVD writer market will look like this.

Total 38 million shipped units
LG ships 7-8 million
Next will be: NEC, Pioneer, Samsung Electronics, Lite-On IT, Matsushita

I'm not sure why the article says Matsushita is the one of the two makers producuing 16x DVD writers. The other is Taiwan's BenQ. Perhaps the reporter is confusing Matsushita with Pioneer.

Samsung will produce 16x DVD writers in their Philippinnes factory. LG has capacity of over one million DVD writers a month in Pyungtaek factory of South Korea though they also have factories in China. Samsung wants to take the top seat by the end of next year and plans to sell 15 million DVD writer units in 2004. They expect the yearly shipped number of DVD writer market in 2004 will surpass 50 million. I think the number could be much higher than 50 million depending on competitions and how PC makers like HP and Dell will include 16x DVD writers as standard as FDDs and HDDs.

I am quite aware that most people here don't care much about Samsung DVD writers. However, that doesn't affect the market by that much. Who said Samsung DRAM was best 5 years ago or even now?

Now if they would only release some firmware updates for the drives they already made, folks would take them more seriously.

I have too many working Samsung optical drives with me most of whose manufacturing date is years ago. :D

How many 16x DVD writers from Samsung will die within two years from manufactured date?

The avareage quality in terms of "MTBF" idoes not differ so much from manufacturers to manufacturers unless it's a extremely good case or extremely bad case. What affects the markeet share is usually how to make more with the least cost. That kind of thinking is possible because the quality is usually nearly same. The rest is mostly pure preference over brand name. Samsung has already sold far more than 100 million optical drives. How many of the first 100 million Samsung optical drives are by now, excluding user-destroyed ones? Many big companies and governments buy PCs with Samsung HDDs and ODDs. After some years, they sell them by the hundreds or thousands to exporters who then sell them to overseas importers or somebody else. How much likely it is to find a faulty drive out of randomly chosen 10 drives? From what I've seen myself and heard from other industry insiders, the probability is extremely low.

You are implying there are no "folks" who take them seriously unless they satisfy your standard about releasing firmware updates for older-generation drives.

Samsung may not be the most hard-working company but they are usually good at updating firmware for their ODDs and HDDs.

The percentage is not over 50%, and maybe far from even 20-30% but there are still millions of people who like Samsung ODDs.

Personally, I see no reason to dismiss Samsung HDDs and ODDs considering the prices to both OEM and retail, at least in the countries I have checked. I'd rather dismiss Pioneer and Plextor first because they are less productive. I am saying all this because it is contrary to what most posters have said here.

However, there is one place I do not and cannot easily recommend Samsung products: South Korea because Samsung charges two times more than at what they export to the US market. For the same reason, I bought 28 WD HDDs and 7 Lite-On ODDs from 2003 summer to 2004 summer. During the same period, I bought only 4 Samsung HDDs. Products like this is fantastic and does not cost as much as similarly-featured products from Matsushita or Japan Victor in the US market but it's cheaper to import Matsushita or JVC from US or Singapore personally than to buy a local Samsung DVD player in Seoul. That hardly means Samsung will lost any significant chunk of market share because they will try to beat both Lite-On and LG in the most important markets.

I'd like to encourage you to try the latest Samsung P80 HDD drives. 160GB SATA or PATA 8MB buffer is best, with the latest firmware and most recently manufactured. If I had US$10K spare money, I'd order 100 P80 160GB SATA drives instantly.

As for LCD, my NewQ 20-inch LCD monitor works better than 19-inch Samsung LCD monitor. The NewQ has some things that the Samsung doesn't have while being much cheaper. Half of the world's LCD monitors on the market today use either LG-Philips or Samsung LCD panels so the quality usually doesn't vary much. Only the cost.

I have just opened the media box I received yesterday. It ws sent from Mr. Innundo working in Seoul. Half of them has the following information from DVDinfopro.

edia Information
Region information N/A not a DVD-VIDEO
Media code/Manufacturer ID YUDEN000T02

I hope nobody thinks it is strange that I am using DVDinfopro by NicW. I was one of the very first persons to introduce the program to South Korea and taught many people both inside the industry and among web communities how to use the program to find out more about DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD-R, DVD-RW media.

i agree with kennyshin on samsung hdd... i too have used samsung since they were making 4700prm 2gb with 128kb (only 108kb was available for buffer) to latest 8mb 160gb sata; i can tell you that samsung now makes good drives.

my first samsung 4700rpm 2gb model failed in a month with so much bad sectors & noise & slow (most other drives were 5400rpm except maxtor which had 5200rpm & others had 512kb buffer unlike samsung's 128kb); however, my replacement have not died after 8 yeasrs of service....just retired (i gave away with my dual pentium system)

samsung managed to catch up with others & now samsung makes one of the better value drives; samsung is bit biased to quietness but performance isn't bad...actually better than seagate's baracura 7200.7 plus models & as quiet as seagate

i know hdd because i have used all sorts & currently use western digital's top model 250gb jb model & seagate's 200gb baracura 7200.7 plus, maxtor's 250gb diamond plus 9 & others

speaking of lcd, lcd panel is the half the story in terms of picture quality; there are other parts that can affect picture quality; samsung lcd is good but i prefer hyundai (or hynix or whatever) because of its response time, but like other samsung products, samsung does not excel in any area but do very well in most areas....very well balanced imho

Samsung released and started shipping their first 16x DVD writer this week from their Suwon factory. The official ceremony was done yesterday, Friday, August 6.

Initially, Samsung will concentrate on the "distribution" market by which they mean retail domestic market and later from the fourth quarter this year, they are going to ship to major PC makers like Dell and HP. The target is one million units per month by the end of year 2004. Samsung hopes to replace LG as the No. 1 manufacturer of DVD writers by then. The main competitors are Hitachi-LG, NEC, and Pioneer.

anyway

read dvd+/-r/rw & dl (pressed & recordable) upto 8x
read cd(pressed & recordable) 48x cdrw 32x

When the page says IE cannot find the page, just click OK and then click the Back button in IE. The Samsug Electronics South Korean homepage still hasn't fixed the login bug.

I find it interesting that Samsung now supports these:

SAT (Speed Adjustment Technology),
TAC (Tilt Actuator Compensation)
Double OPC (Optimum Power Control)
SPWM (Silent Pulse Width Modulation)

The CAV 16x writing is also faster than Plextor's PX-712A's fastest and Pioneer's DVR-A08's fastest, at much lower prices.

The CD-Roms close theirself without any command from the user, i had often that htey close the tray while i insert a CD (not nice). The DVD-Roms from Samsung can´t read media after a lifetime from 9 Month, the CD-writer have bad writing quality :(

my experience with samsung optical drives are limited just two cdroms 48x & 52x & one cdrw 52x & one dvdrom from xbox (from my friend) all have been good to me & i can say i have been satisfied with them except 48x cdrom...it was bit loud compare to other drives; as far as i can know, xbox's samsung dvd rom is better than other xboxes with different dvdroms; samsung dvd rom can read just about any....btw my dvd player is about 3 year old samsung & it can read whatever i thraw at it even disks that could not be read with 712a

from kennyshin's post, it appears that samsung really tried hard to make dvd write with good compatability with most media...i really hope that samsung sets a new standard

Since you asked me what good optical drive Samsung has made, I'll be blunt. Every Samsung optical drive is good enough.

CD-ROM closing without user command and that's the fault of entire Samsung optical drives?

Wake up. Samsung has sold more optical products than any other company probably so far. As far as I know, that's the truth. In the CD writer market alone, Samsung has shipped more than 50 million units. If what said is true, there are probably by now more than 50 million CD writers from Samsung that produce badly-written CD-R disks worldwide and the number of those CD-R disks would be about 10,000,000,000. You should sue Samsung for harming global environment on such a titanic scale if you are serious. And add to that all those Samsung optical drives you call "trash."

http://www.cdrlabs.com/reviews/index.php#samsung

Since this is CDRLabs after all, the most trusted sources about optical disk drives are probably the CDRLabs reviews among the visitors, not one visitor.

The first Samsung CD writer ever reviewed at CDRLabs:

http://www.cdrlabs.com/reviews/index.php?reviewid=121

And the last:

http://www.cdrlabs.com/reviews/index.php?reviewid=212

I can see no evidence among any review that justifies calling Samsung drives trash.

As I said above:

it's always a consumer's right to decide what to buy from whom.

It's your right to choose to buy a Plextor or a Samsung or Siemens or whatever you like most or think as best, but if you want to call something what tens of millions of users have used without much problem and without paying too much trash, you better have something more reliable to support your conclusion. Something like that a Samsung-burned CD-R disk will explode on December 31, 2999 might sound better.

Hello!

@kennyshin:

I know, what I say. Samsung has offer many products with a low quality. The CD-Roms that closes itself I´ve seen at 5 drives from 12 (32x and 48x).

The DVD-Rom-drives died often under a one-year-use.

Look at the last reviews from CDFreak and look at the writing speed/quality at their last Combo-drives: slow and bad writing quality.

The only Samsung-products I will buy are Ram-memory and montitors, other products from Samsung I´ve had bad experiences.

From my personal experience, the only optical drive I had that wore out was a Samsung. True, it was an 8x cdrom, and it did wear out after 4 years. However, all others still work well.

It seems that the Samsung hard drives have a very good reliability reputation.

Samsungs drives have been hit and miss. While some have been pretty good.. others have sucked hard. Then again, Plextor has had a few lemons over the years as well.

I own some of Samsung's other products (monitors, TV's, etc) and I've been very happy with them. They're pretty decent for the money.

I don´t know the TV´s, but Monitors are good.

But their optical drives, including DVD-Player are not to recommend, not even for their low prices

what can i say, now many highly regarded brands like samsung & sony are making lemons....my sony dsc-w1 had to be replaced more than 3 times with so many hassle, i don't think i would buy any sony cams;

don't even talk about sony's vaio desktop...they are pos & super expensive; gigapocket(tv tuner analog video capture card) is non standard that it works only with sony software which is pos imo

my point is there are too many lemons out there...even brand like sony... but others are even worse....we have just live with that; however, i was so disappointed in sony just because i paid so much more than samsung, i cannot forgive sony; i am now a samsung guy...samsung products sometimes look not as stylish as sony(sometime even more stylish than sony) but usually give better values & service than sony from my experience...sony products are simply way too overpriced

for dvd drives....i had at least two lemons from plextor & i am mad just because i paid way too much for 708a (240usd) & 712a (160usd) (both were made in japan & yes, i was lucky to get super rare made in japan stuff but they were lemons nevertheless)...if i get a lemon from liteon for 60usd, i wouldn't be angry at all just because it is so much cheaper
