anyone having usb device error with usb2 hdd?

Postby shimman on Tue Aug 17, 2004 1:45 pm

hi, this is not an exactly dvdrw drive question but when i tried to create iso images of dvd disks, i got an error message from winxp "write failed" & under then event logs from admin tools, there were 3 controller errors.
however, when i tried to do copy or move files from the usb hdd, it worked perfectly. it seems like this happens whenever there are heavy accessings & heavy cpu utilizations

i tried this on both via chipset athlon pc with via usb2 pci card & intel chipset p4 with integrated intel usb2 controller & both were same

i like to know this is normal to winxp or my usb2 external enclouser is bad; the enclouser has ali chip in it.

thanks for your help

Are you plugging the drive directly into your USB 2.0 card, or are you using a hub? I have a Bytec enclosure that generates similar errors if I plug it into my 4-port hub, but works fine when I plug it directly into my laptop.

It's a strange problem. My USB 2.0 Western Digital 120 GB drive works very well across 3 different computers (2 Win ME, 1 Win XP).

I would try putting the image on the main system IDE hard drive first, than transferring to the external, if needed. Sounds safer to me.

I think that the hub idea has a lot of merit. I had a 40 Gb external that acted the same way. I removed it from the hub and it became a dependable back-up again. It actually became reliable enough for me to want to go ahead and upgrade it to a 120 Gb hdd, which I did recently.

Hello!

I have an external USB-case with a IBM DTLA 305030. It works fine when the computer have not much to do, but when I work hard with the computer the HDD-drive disappears and I must do a restart of the external drive to see it in the Explorer. This happens on 3 PC´s i used with this drive
