NEC 3500A - Max CDR Speed?

Postby mpkelley20 on Mon Aug 23, 2004 10:30 pm

Ok, new here and this is probably a stupid question so please excuse my ignorance. I just bought my first DVD burner (NEC 3500) from Newegg.com. No problems installing it but Nero is telling me that the max write speed for CDR's is only 32X.

I've checked to make sure that DMA is enabled, I've used CDR's that rate at 48X (Fuji's by TY) but it still writes at only 32X.

Since this was an OEM model, the driver it is using is from Win XP and is dated 2001. I checked NEC website but could not find an updated driver.

I have a Liteon 52X burner that works fine so I believe my PC is capable of burning faster than 32X.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

Try Verbatim media. It's one of the few types that will work at 48x with that drive.

Otherwise try ACER, CMC, Moser Baer, or Ritek.

Thanks. I'll give Verbatim media a try.

I thought the problem might not be with the media I was using but rather with the drive because Nero only recognizes the top write speed for this drive at 32X. This is under the recorder information when using Nero, not when actually burning the CD.

Is there a place to update the driver for this model? Since the 3500A just came out, I would think that there are newer drivers than what my Windows is using from 2001.

I guess that's just my bad for buying an OEM. But for $88, who can complain!

Tonight will be my first attempt at burning a DVD. Will be using the free media (DVD-R) sent to me from Newegg.

Using TDK CD-R media, I am able to burn @ 48X on my 3500A.

Yeah, TDK is another one on NEC's list. I didn't post it though since it was TDK's own media.. which seems to be impossible to find these days.

Check this NEC thread on CDFREAKS.COM

It seems NEC has locked the speed for certain CD media. In this thread they show the results of several different brands. A lot are at 32X.
Intel P4, 2.4Ghz
MSI NE0 865PE
1GB RAM
Memorex 52X CD-RW
NEC 3500A DVD-RW
Hitachi 160GB SATA
Maxtor 80GB in USB enclosure
ATI 9600 AIW

Thanks for the link. Looks like I'll continue to use my Lite-On 52X for my CDR burning sice I have about a billion Ty discs left!

yup....used different media and it now burns at 48X. I'm surprised that NEC has put a 32X limit on Ty made discs. I always considered them some of the most reliable media out there but I guess NEC thinks otherwise.

Thanks for all your help!
