Media Help PLextor?

Postby CanDan on Mon Sep 06, 2004 6:24 pm

Hi Guys,

Nice site btw. I'm new to this DVD-R thing, so I need a little help please...

I have the Plextor PX-712A, and getting media is a pain.

I grabbed some VAKOSS DVD-R from work, I rtried to burn a couple of things and didn't work. Even at slow speeds. I coastered 4 of them. Especially died at leadout.

The one that came with the drive (+R) burned at max speed it just had a plextor label on it. But, like I say worked great. The plextor website says Maxell works, but are there cheaper alternatives out there?

Second thing, I have 50 TDK CD-Rs. Some work fine, some don't. The ones that don't get an area error message? Is this just dodgy media or what?

Thanks in advance for all your help.

have you upgraded the drive to firmware 1.05 yet? that might help with some of the media issues. But the fact is, the PX-712a is pretty picky!

Yeah, I did Dolphinius,

I thought it would fix the prob too. I saw a Plextor lover on here somewhere, he might know. Or do you have one too Dolphinius?

What media you recommend?

That's Plextor Fan(atic) mind you!

The PX-712A is like a dog... Feed it a rubber toy, and it'll just suck on it, feed it a hamburger, and it'll do good, just not as good as it could do. Feed it a steak, and it does excellent!

Moral of the story? Feed it good media, Maxell, TY, MCC, 4x Ritek media written @ 4x all come to mind.

The PX-712a can't HANDLE anything but super expensive media

and yes, I have a PX-712a as well. I prefer to only bad mouth things I have personal experience with

Just get some DVD+R PRODISC R03 (about $0.40 each per/100)
They will burn @ 12x with very high quality...
Dolphin is not the only one with this drive...

ok, that's true, I tend to ignore Prodisc when thinking about media types. Prodisc seems to work ok on at least some (maybe all?) Plextor drives.

Thanks Guys.

I just bought some Maxell DVD+Rs from Future shop at lunch. I'll give 'em a spin when I get home. Is it also true (I've heard) that + media is a lot more forgiving than - media? In which case, why would I even bother with - media? Just a thought...

-R media has been around longer so more players are compatible with that type of media. If you have a newer player, say less than a year or two old, it should play both. If you find it likes one format over the other, you have your answer.

I would not say either format is more forgiving then the other. Both are what they are, and certain drives seem to lean one way or the other.

I'm sure you've seen the discussions on cdfreaks about the 712...
Heres what this batch looks like burned @ 8x on my LiteOn.
