TDK or Pioneer?

I am in need of a DVDR drive asap. If time wasn’t a factor I would prolly order something online (ie NEC 3500a from newegg or something)

The local Frys has 2 decent 8x drives on sale:

TDK Indi DVD 880N
Pioneer A07

The TDK is more expensive, but I'll go for it if its notably better than the Pioneer.

Anyone have + or – exp's with either of these drives?

Good question.

I have multiple computers, I all ready own 3 DVDR drives.

The simple answer in this case is that there are none currently on sale at the local Frys. This drive is for a friend/client that has to be up and running tonight.

If this drive was for me personally, I still wouldnt be too concerned with DL. Blank media is still what, ~$12 a disc? And still proving to be finicky? There are many quality retail titles that cost less than that. When I make a coaster out of a 10 cent CDR, I dont care. If I made a coaster out of a DL disc I would be pissed.

By the time DL media is a reasonable price the current DL burners will be obsolete compared to the newer ones coming out at that time. I will wait till then to be serious about a DL burner.

Well then, i'm an old "fashion guy" and so for me a dvd burner is to burn dvds and a cd burner is to burn CDs.
Using this thought and knowing that the specs are pretty much the same for me it would be a quality issue.
Try to find reviews and oppinions from people that own the drive. I've heard god an bad things from both the drives so it's really up to you.

I don't know what your local Fry's is showing, but mine is showing:
Pioneer, 8x8 @ $60 AMIR
TDK, 12X Dual Format, $70 AMIR
BTC, 8x Dual @ $60 NRR

Who will get either the NEC 3500A, or (after I see a review, if any) the LiteOn SOHW1633S because whether or not he needs all the functions, he just won't leave anything on the table.

The TDK in my ad is an 8x for $99 AMIR.

Pioneer and BTC are the same as above. Theres also that Artec 12x for $70 but that thing is a POS.

Looks like the Pioneer is alot better bang for buck, I think I will go with it.

That is a big difference in the TDK. Your Fry's is $30 more for 4x less. Where do you live?

Huge difference. In general it looks like TDK drives are more expensive than the competition at most anywhere.

That TDK at your Frys is a nice deal, even with the reBATE.

I live in Sacramento. The local Frys here is in the old "Incredible Universe" building that was a major flop for Radioshack/Tandy. I used to hate Frys, but in the last few years their sale prices have been unmatched, particularly on their MB/CPU combos.

Hmmm.............watch out for the combos. Buy it for the CPU and toss the POS mobo away. Next time I see a good deal on a 2.8 P4, I think that I will do just that. This AM's is a 2.4 P4 with mobo for about a $100 down here.

I'm surprised that your specials are different as we are both in California.

our staples store just got in a few 16x dual layer dual format burners

sony dru-710
memorex flavor
I/O Magic flavor

all the drives are 2.4x on DVD+R DL

the memorex is only 8x dvd-r, the other 2 are 16x on both formats

The TDK Indi DVD 880N is a rebranded NEC 2500A, which can be flashed to support DVD+R DL burning.

That being said, either of those drives are a fine choice, and your client should be happy with whichever model you decide to purchase.
