very late but better than never, i guess.

btw, isn't 716's auto strategy sounds a lot like what rumored 712 quality control fix firmware. would it really come out for 712????

I doubt they'd call it that on the PX-712a, since then it couldn't make its' debut on the PX-716a. We'll see if a new PX-712a firmware fixes more of its' problems.

Two different animals from what I hear. Firmware fixes like the 712 are a result of media changing quality, bug fixes, or new media. The factory has to do all the testing and fixing.

The AutoStrategy stuff is a learn as you go routine to do the factory testing and write strategy development on an as-needed basis. In theory, you you get some poor quality DVD media, enable the autostrategy, and voila! you have have a current write strategy for that media...

i've uploaded a new exe of my bitsetter which just sends the same command to the px708 as to the px712, hoping that it does work.

Can anyone try if it really works?

:) I'm happy to see that the latest Plex tools and using the latest Nero will allow bitsetting witht the 708A drive. Here's a kprobe scan I posted at cdfreaks.com of a IMATION (RICOH) DVD+R 4x speed burned @ 8x with my 708A.

Is it correct that Nero without PlexTools doesn't do it?

I'm not sure to understand ?

Nero 6.3.1.25 can do bitsetting since a couple of days now.
Plextools 2.17 is just release, and can do bitsetting too.

The bitsetting capability is in the drive firmware...

Yes, but Nero doesn't show the Bitsetting option for the plextor 708 ;) At least there are people who told me that.

Again: does this work with the plextor 708 now?

Is the booktype setting effective for PX-708A and PX-712A ?
PX-708A -> yes from firmware 108
PX-712A -> yes from firmware 105
using Plextools from release 2.17 ->
The DVD-ROM booktype is set in the drive once and survive reboot
The DVD-ROM booktype is unset in the same way
This apply to DVD+R and DVD+R-DL only

Correct me if I am incorrect or incomplete

The setting doesn't survive reboot (i.e if you don't launch PlexTools automatically. If you do launch PlexTools automatically, then it will reset it after each reboot)

check that thread on how to bitset with plextools and the 708a drive.
fyi you need to use the latest version of nero 6.3.1.25 and plextor's firmware 1.08 to get bitsetting capability. it won't show up in nero that you're bitsetting, it's set in plextools. i burned a DVD+R 4x speed disc in my 708a then checked with dvdinfo pro & it showed the disc in DVD-ROM mode. take a look at the link i provided. :)

ok, so you have confirmed that Nero is once more stupid... but I still don't know if those 2 plextor drives are using different commands for bitsetting

In case you didn't notice: Being stuck to PlexTools (or even Nero :eek: ) is inacceptable. The goal is to find out if it already does work without those.

Not everyone can get PlexTools work, and even worse, PlexTools is Windows only. People not having windows can only use Bitsetting on the Plextor 708 if it is implemented into some non-windows-tool, and that can only be done if the command that has to be used is retrieved somehow.

If the next version of Nero supports Bitsetting on the Plextor 708, then I can do it on my own (I don't have a Plextor 708, but I'm sure I can make Nero think that my Plextor 712 were a Plextor 708). For DVDDecrypter, it will even be easier if it supports Bitsetting on the Plextor 708.

I can't even remember how I got PlexTools to work on this particular pc. I know I had to edit the registry to make it work. So if I had to do it again I'd probably be in trouble & have to ask for instructions again! :lol:

So is it THAT hard to check if my bitsetter works on the plextor 708? All I want to know is if it works or not...

Not sure if you realize that, but if it does, then you wouldn't need PlexTools anymore and wouldn't be in trouble because you wouldn't have to install it again... i mean, LIGHTNING UK will not release a new version of DVD Decrypter just to add Plextor Bitsetting... his next version will have Plextor Bitsetting, but only LIGHTNING UK knows when ;)

What did I say about what drives I have and which one I don't have??? Would I try to make a Nero user handle a command line tool + readme.txt if I had such a drive to find out myself? :o #-o [-o< :roll:

Alexnoe, I would be glad to try the bitsetting tool, the only problem is I have a TDK 840G 1.08 (rebadged 708A) and I don't think the tool recognizes the drive as one that can be bitset.

TDK rebadged Plextor drives??

Sometimes even rebadged drives get different firmwares, sometimes with bitsetting if the original drive doesn't do it, and sometimes without bitsetting even if the original drive can do it, but we can try. I'll make the tool try it with your drive

Well at least the TDK 840G is rebadged Plextor, this thread even details how to use the Plextor firmware to flash the TDK (which I have done a couple of times with success):

the bitset.exe in that folder should now try Plextor 712 bitsetting on TDK drives. Either it works or it doesn't... but if it does work, then the Plextor 712 bitsetting command works on the Plextor 708 as well.

It should report your drive as 'trying plextor bitsetting'
