It's definitely about time they started selling their own drives here in the US. At $99.95, the ND-3500A is going to be stealing a lot of sales from Pioneer whose retail drive is still priced at $150+

Nice!
Dare I say, this might even improve firmware support. :-?

Does the rest of the world where NEC does have retail drives get firmware updates?
I don't see why this will change anything.

I'd actually guess that the Japanese would be better at nagging. The US is usually not on the cutting-edge while the Japanese seem to be obsessed with the latest-and-greatest new gadgets, so it'd seem that they'd be a bit more whiny if their latest-and-greatest toy was not as great as they'd hoped. While most US customers would be like "hey, honey, the movie is playing now! yay, it works!"
