While I doubt they will, it would be nice if Lite-On released a free 1633S to 1653S upgrade.

I wouldn't count on the 1633 or 1653 being capable of 16x DVD-R writing speeds. From what I've heard, some of the components can't handle these speeds with -R media.

Sounds like a similar situation to the 851s drive, which couldn't handle 8x DVD-R recording, even with the 832s firmware.

There's still the question of whether the 1653 has a different laser, as it is supposed to have. So it might be cross-flashable with the 1633, but the results of doing so are in question.

I'm guessing the 1653S doesn't have the new laser. If it did, wouldn't it make sense to advertise it as a 16x16 drive?

I also know for a fact that one manufacturer is releasing a firmware update that will give their drive 12x -R and 4x DL writing speeds... and its based on the 1633S.

Guess someone will have to get one and look inside.
My info is that the 1653 will have a different revision of the same laser as the 1633, and the 1673/1693 will have a still different variation and will be 8x/6x RW capable. All 3 are supposed to be 16x -R capable.
