I wonder what Yamaha does for the DVD+RW alliance... :-k

Nice! Tanks for the info Ian.
I was going to ask about when DL (8X)
write speed capability would happen.

The big question:
Can I wait till spring to get 8X DL instead of 4X - 5X DL now (Toshiba 5X DL is out now).
Maybe I will buy one now; I can always sell it when the faster ones come out in about 6 months, since 8X speed will make a big difference in terms of burn time when burning 8 GB.

Why? DVD-R is going to be at 16x very soon... even I already have some 16x DVD-R media :wink: 6x DVD-RWs are almost available, 8x will follow shortly after. 4x DVD-R9 will be out in the next couple of months, and 8x DVD-R9 will likely follow shortly after 8x DVD+R9. DVD-R isn't that far behind.

The bigger question is whether or not 8x DL media will be available in the spring. Writing at 4x - 5x is great because you can use 2.4x media. By spring, it should be cheap(er) as well.

The first 4x DVD+RW media was crap.... let's wait till we see 8x DVD+RW media in action! I guess it won't work either at the beginning, and that we'll have to wait for Verbatim to lauch theirs

In the past, Verbatim was usually first off the blocks with new media (CD-RW 24x, 32x; DVD+DL), so I hope the first part of your comment won't apply... :wink:

Agreed.
I just meant that, in my case, if I can wait till Spring, I can save one more buy-sell situation.
However, the fun of having and using a burner now is worth losing some money when I resell it; so I think I was asking (myself) a rhetorical question. :)

Yamaha was one of the first companies to go for double density CD's and sold over 5 million 1.2gig CD readers. (they come with the Sega dreamcast). So although they dont sell to end users, they sell OEM parts to other manufacturers. Just like Ricoh..

But... What does Dell bring to anyone?

Dell brings money I guess... as well as strong sales support.

Probably most drives that will be able to burn at 8x DVD+R9 and 8x DVD+RW... but since none have been announced for ANY of those formats, it's impossible to be 100% sure yet.

The Plextor 716 will do 8x +RW somewhen in the distant future (after fixing 8x and faster writing on +R...)

Is that an official guarentee? It's not like Plextor to offer those free upgrades.

Princo has 8X RW's? Going for $6 so should be like $3 in the US.
Since there are no 8X writers think they think that their 4X RW's will work @ 8x. Heck not like they pay to get certified :)

Where are these selling? I'd love to get some.
