Anyone seen this NERO error before?

Postby mikeb on Wed Oct 06, 2004 9:37 am

I just tried to burn a set of DVD Shrink output files to a Ritek G04 DVD-R and got the following error at the end of the burn. Everything looked fine thru the whole process (with the exception that for some reason the buffer was at or near 100% the whole time) and as soon as it got the 100% complete with the writing...

6:43:41 PM Caching of files started
6:43:41 PM Caching of files completed
6:43:41 PM Burn process started at 4x (5,520 KB/s)
6:58:39 PM LITE-ON DVDRW LDW-811S
Session fixation error
6:58:39 PM LITE-ON DVDRW LDW-811S
Could not perform end of Disc-at-once
6:58:39 PM Burn process failed at 4x (5,520 KB/s)

I've tried 4 of these DVD-Rs and all have failed? What gives? Thanks

Mike

If you place one of those discs back into your recorder, and then go to Nero's 'Disc Info' feature, is there an option in the bottom left of the window to 'Close Session' and 'Close Disc'?

If there is, choose one to close the session or disc, and see if you are then able to read whats written to the disc.

The full nero log file from the failed write attempt would help me diagnose the issue better.

Craig

Where would I find the "full nero log" file? Are you talking about whats in the window (because if so, I think what I posted was pretty much it), or something that is actually written to a file somewhere? Thanks, Mike

At the end of any write attempt, Nero will ask you if you wish to save the Nero log file.

If you failed to save this log file, you can go to C:\Program Files\Ahead\Nero folder and find a file called NeroHistory.log, and this will contain a history of your last few write attempts.

Ok, saved off a copy of the log from my most recent burning attempt with the Ritek G04s. Here it is...do you guys see anything suspicious? Thanks,

Mike

it could be bad media.

Ritek G04 comes in various levels of quality. some good some not so good. you might have gotten some of the crap G04s.

try more media.

I will try CCampbell's recommendation tonite and let you know how that turns out. But could bad media really cause the problem that Nero couldn't complete the disc-at-once phase on every disc? I would have thought with bad media, either I couldn't burn it at all, or maybe it would crap out half way thru, but it seems to do the whole burn ok. Assuming it is bad media, should I open one of the other cakes (I bought 4 of them from Shop4Less), or should I attempt to return them? What +R media would you recommend...I thought the Ritek's were supposed to be fairly good? Thanks and sorry for the double post (got confused with another forum).

Hi Mike,

You did get a Queueing error, which is normally associated with old firmware, old version of Nero software, or poor media. So yes it could be the media. The only way to find out if it is the cause, is to try another brand of media.

You should also enable DMA for all your devices, not just your recorder. As this can cause various errors, including a queuing error.

Craig

Hi Craig,

I've never had this kind of error with any other media I've tried, and I've used a number of different types, mostly +R, but a couple -R's as well. Most of the problems I've had with other media is glitchly/pixilated play on my set top DVD player, which I had attributed to bad media, but never a problem during the burn process. As for the DMA enabling, I've gone into my Control Panal/System and verified that both Primary and Secondary IDE channels have "Use DMA if available" on both devices, 0 and 1, but in both cases, the 0's is using Ultra DMA, but the 1's are both using PIO mode. I've tried a number of suggestions, like switching them to PIO Mode, clicking ok, then switching them back to DMA and even rebooting between switches, as well as uninstalling the IDE channel, then rebooting and letting WindowsXP reset them, but they always come back with 0 using Ultra DMA and 1 using PIO Mode?

Hmm, I'm sure your Hard Drive supports DMA. If you disconnect the NEC drive, do you still have this issue?

Just a test when you have nothing but time on your hands. It is very likely not the cause of your issues.

As for the media issues, all I can say is make sure you do have the latest firmware. And though you never had trouble before, the only way to know for sure this is not the issue is to try a single piece of media from another MFG, just to confirm this is not the issue.

Craig

I put the disc back into my recorder, and went into Nero's "Disc Info" and it says the disc is empty. I also just upgraded to the firmware to the latest version that is available at LiteOn's web site...so I'm guessing your diagnonis would be bad media?

Hi Mike,

Its just a guess at this point. I can not say with 100% surity. But it is the most likely suspect at this point based on what you have done and the information you have provided.

And just becuase the Recorder can detect that there is media in the Recorder, and that its blank does not mean it can determine the first writable address, or the correct Power to use for the write.

It could still be something else, but we could spend days trying to debug it, and only come back to find out that it was media. Its always best to resolve those issues that are easy to determine, and then go down the list of other possibilities that are more difficult to determine.

Hi Mikeb

i have exactly the same experiance as you when i use Ritek G04 -R DVDs. I have prior to the latest version of NERO (6601) had no problems, but with this latest update i get the same error using these DVDs; see inserted logfile

Hopefully the NERO guy sees this, as i do not have this problem using other burner software.

When using NERO info tool as CCambel suggests, i do not get the option to close "session" (its greyed out) only "disc" and when trying that option i get another error. Only thing to do hereafter is to throw the DVD away, its useless.

Best regards Jorn

Hey Jim,

Well, that rules out my next step...Ahead Tech Support recommended I upgrade to NERO Burning ROM 6.6.0.1, but I guess thats just their standard answer rather than actually investigating the problem. I also hope someone from NERO actually reads these posts because this is really frustrating. Thanks for the sympathy!

HI mikeb, its Jorn not jim :-)

ntl; i tried with other identical media, and they seemed to work. I have a faint idea that it may have something to do with other burning software being installed. The first burn after a reinstall of Clonedvd worked flawlewss.

Make some analyses, and try again and let us know...

Hi Jorn/Mike,

In Jorns case, his log file clearly states a Medium error, and a 'No Seek Complete' which is a definate media error.

90% of the time this type of error message is caused by poor media, poor power to the recorder, or an optical head needing cleaning, or a drive needing to be serviced.

But it's only 90% of the time. On a rare occasion I've seen this caused by driver conflicts. Either from other software, or drivers for the IDE Controller.

As for the Tech recommending an upgrade. THey should not be doing this if they know you have Nero 6.6 already. If you included this in your Email, or attached log file, then they did not read it carefully and I apologize for them. Hopefully it was a new Tech still in training. :)

Regards,

Craig

hey mikeb and jorn,

unfortunately I have the same problem as you guys, my log file is pretty identical to that of yours with the session fixation error.
I have the LITE-ON SOHW-812S, 8x for both -/+ and I'm using Ritek Ridata G04 4X DVD-R's. I don't think the problem is with the media even though it may seem like it.. A friend of mine has a LITE-ON LDW-411S, before I got my burner (a couple days ago), I borrowed his burner and burned more than 10 of the ritek dvds I had, no problems whatsoever, the dvds were fine and they worked flawless even on my old dvd-rom drive.
However when I got my own burner I got the same problem as you guys. First I burned no multisession 4x - fixation error, then I tried 2x - fixation error again, I even upgraded nero to 6.6.0.1 and upgraded the drive to the latest firmware - still nothing. Then I tried starting a multisession and I tried closing that session afterwards - that actually did something. My burner can read it perfectly fine but my dvd-rom drive has problems, I can see the files in it but when i view the files (mpeg files) it says that the cd may be damaged or the data is corrupt..some files it can actually play the video but then after a few secs it can't read it anymore.
Howcome my friend's LDW-411S can burn it flawlessly while my SOHW-812S can't on the exact same media???

I have 7 coasters now and 1 semi-coaster...hmmm wonder what's the problem...

Hello Jorn/Mike/Ranz,

I just received some information that may be the cause of this issue. Do you only have this issue with DVD Media? Meaning, if you write to CDR media, do you have any problems?

The reason I ask is that I just learned that Lite-On has changed their command spec for BookType Setting, and this change is not yet supported in the current versions of Nero 6.3.x and Nero 6.6.0.1. It will be supported with the Nero 6.6.0.2 and later, and Nero 6.3.1.27c. And this may be the problem. I do not have a Lite-ON DVD Recorder with this new firmware, so I am not yet able to confirm if this is the case.

I hope to have Nero 6.3.1.27c or later build posted on our website tomorrow under Downloads->Previous Versions and I hope to obtain this new firmware in the next day or two so that I can test and find out of this is the issue.

Again, this is just a guess at this point, but it's the only change I am aware of that could possibly cause this issue.

Regards,

Craig

Hi Craig,

I only have this issue with the Ritek G04's (although I primarily have only used +Rs for the most part), not with other DVD +R media, and I don't have any other -R to try other than the Riteks. So you think this LiteOn firmware change is only applicable the Ritek's or all -R media? I'll give the 6.3.1.27c version a chance, and sure hope if fixes the problem. Thanks, Mike

Hey craig,

Thanks for lookin into it. Yea I've burned several CDRs without any problems, CDRWs work fine too. Umm I don't have any DVD+R's...just those Ritek -R's, no other brands to test it on. So if you're saying Nero might not currently support Lite-On's new settings then would other burning programs work perhaps??? the package came with this "MyDVD" software, which I probably shouldve tested out by now, I just haven't cuz I never thought Nero didn't support my drive. I'll give that a shot and let you guys know if I just wasted another dvd or not.

Hi Ranz,

Nero does support the drive, but if you upgraded the firmware for the Lite-On drive, then we may not support the BookType setting any more, as they did change the command specs for this.

We have already received the new specs from Lite-ON, but do not yet have a version of Nero 6.3 posted that will support it. We will have this posted on our website soon, as it is supported from Nero 6.3.1.27c and any later versions that may come out. Our WEB Master is working on the website now to post Nero 6.3 downloads under Previous Versions for download.

This may not be the issue, but its the only change that I am aware of that could possibly affect your burn process.

Craig,

Any idea when the 6.3.1.27c or 6.6.0.2 versions will be available to download? Thanks,

Dont think its the media or Liteon Drive

Postby Jorn on Sun Nov 07, 2004 1:52 pm

Hi

I have just made yet another coaster on the Ritek 04 with Nero 6601. I have a SONY DRU 510a, latest firmware - so its not likely its related to the Liteon's.

Further, i use the same media with other burner programmes, never got any coaster what so ever. It seems definetely its related to Ritek AND NERO in conjunction.

Thanks Craig, its good to know youre looking into it.

Best regrads Jorn.
