The burner is only 8X and is a Dynex...
The media, however is Fuji, which is nice.
It seems to be a pretty reasonable deal.

Speaking of DVD media deals and BestBuy:
I picked up 75 TDK 4X DVD+Rs at BestBuy late yesterday afternoon for $14.97 after rebates + $2 tax (tax on 29.97).
This was NOT advertised (the shelf tag said $24.99 and didn't mention any rebate. They rang up at $9.99 and a $5 MIR form per pack printed out automatically; saw it on a Hot Deals site and jumped in the car, since I was headed out anyway to run an errand at Home Depot and visit my parents who live close to those two stores)...
The rebate was $5 for each of three 25-packs (rebate good for up to 3 packs per person).

I know they're only 4X, but TDK DVD+Rs for 20 cents a piece is still not too shabby.
Burners only:
Pioneer DVR-115D
Pioneer DVR-111D
Plextor PX-716A TLA0304
Plextor PX-716A same TLA

LiteOn 52246S 52X CD-RW
LiteOn 52246S (another)
LiteOn 52327S 52X CD-RW
TDK 40X USB 2.0 CD-RW
TEAC CD-W540E 40X CD-RW

Its not really worth it. For like $40 more you can get a 16X burner and TY media.

Boost Mobile stole my minutes, then would rather loose me as a customer than give back my minutes (thieves).

What drive is used in the Dynex package?

Or do they make their own drives?

It is reported as being a BTC oem. Not really a quality drive from what I've heard.

Hmm, but not an awful price for Fuji-branded TY media. And I can give the drive as a Christmas gift to someone.

Someone who is not very knowledgeable of their computer hardware. :)

If they're not that knowledgeable, you could give them your current DVD writer, and use it as an excuse to buy a newer, better one for yourself. That way they get good quality and you get good quality. Better choice all around in my book. :D

Well, I have an NEC ND-2500A (with Herrie's B5 firmware) and a Sony DWU-18A (with the Lite-On SOHW-832S firmware) and I'm quite happy with both of the drives. None of the 16x drives have really impressed me from what I've read about them. I can wait another generation. :)

My mom recently came to me, wanting to send movies over to my sister and brother-in-law, who are missionaries in the Philippines. Their little one and a half year old daughter, my neice, does not like the telephone. She got to be with us lots this summer (they came home because of my wedding) and she recognizes our faces, but when she hears their voices through the phone and can't see their faces, she does not understand and pushes the phone away, saying "no no".

My mom figures if they video themselves and send it over, she'll understand that just fine. So, she'll get my NEC 2500A (which hasn't seen tons of use) and I'll get an NEC 3500A. Works well all around. :)

The good news is that I just order the package online at BB, it came up to be $79.99, not $99.99 as suggested in the flyer.
When I was picking up the order, I check at the isle, and it was showing as $99.99.
So order online and the pick it up in the store and save yourslef another $20!

Thanks a bunch! I am upgrading a computer for somebody in the next couple of weeks, and this looks like it will provide him with a nice $50 line item (the burner that is). He will probably thank me for it too. Damn, I can be a little evil sometimes!
