Why no In house review of NEC 3500?

Postby chiphead on Thu Nov 04, 2004 8:03 am

This is the drive that's been getting a lot of accolades recently and CDRLabs, the best DVDRW site on the web, doesn't have a review yet. What's wrong with this picture???

This was discussed in another thread. I believe they are waiting for new firmware to be relased. see link below

2.16 is what's on the drive and that is all they will give me. I've been bugging their engineers for months to give me something newer and they won't. It's too bad since the drive would probably do better in our testing.

While I understand that they want to test and perfect their firmware updates, NEC could really learn a lesson from Lite-On and BenQ about releasing them more often.

I agree.
It seems that only the OEM customers can get NEC to release new firmwares more frequently.

from what I've heard, there is MASSIVE testing going on for the new firmware for the NEC 3500a. Whatever it turns out to be, it should be very good I'm told... but as you say Ian, it's too bad they can't release something now, so the review will be more favourable. Not to say that drive isn't good already... but I think it could be a little better

I'll bet they backed up the new firmware work on a Princo and the development machines crashed and now they can't retrieve their work...

i heard that nec is working on a firmware for a new drive that will burn dvd+rw with 8x and dvd-rw with 6x speed.
i think this new model is based on the 3500 hardware.

According to my contact at NEC America, the 2.17 firmware should be available later this week. They'll have it on their website.

I was hoping that they'd at least release 2.18... but this is better than nothing.

What about people with 2.06? Will they be releasing 2.07 or 2.08? :-?

Well they just could claim 8x DVD+RW and 6x DVD-RW write speed and then later actually fix the real support when it comes to quality. I have seen that one befor.
Trying to make something "foolproof" only forces nature to make a better fool.

That's just the OEM version of the 3500A, right? I'm sure they'll be out at the same time as well.

In another site some body has claimed that NEC in Europe has released F/W version 2.18 for the ND-3500AG drive today, I wonder if there is any truth to that?.

Thanks TCAS! I'll have to point out to NEC America that they're lagging a little behind...

Hrm, I'll have to try it later, but I doubt that 2.06 will upgrade to 2.18 :-?

The NEC 3500AG review is in the works... it's still a ways away yet, since I am quite anal about how I do my testing. It will be well worth the wait however
