NEC 3500 Firmware Opinions

Postby Joker on Sun Nov 14, 2004 11:30 am

Now that 2.18 has been out for a while, what's the verdict on the better firmware?

Stick with Herrie's 2.17
2.18_TDB
Other?

What would be lost in moving from Herrie's 2.17 to TDB 2.18, anything?

All the different versions are confusing with no single source that I can find that diescribes the differences in capabilities, such as bitsetting. Do all the modified firmwares have the rip lock removed and are RPC1? Is bitsetting the primary difference (other than the individual write strategies)?

- Special NEC 2.18SE has the newest strategies, is RPC1 and has rip lock speed removed, and all DL discs @ 4X

- Special MadDog/NEC 3500 2.FA SE is a bit older with startegies version but is RPC1, has rip lock speed removed and supports SL/DL Bitsetting and has all DL discs @ 4X.

Those SE special firmwares can be found on cdrinfo.

Different people have different need and expectation from firmware and DVD writers, me personally have tried 2.16Orig, 2.16 hacked, 2.17.2.27 (original & hacked) finally I am using 2.18_TDB now which I find it very reliable and suit my purpose.

Liggy at cdfreaks has just posted a 2.18 hacked firmware that can do SL & DL bitsetting (he reports portions of the MadDog 2.FA fw into the 2.18 NEC firmware). It's pure beta, so be aware of what you're doing...
