DVD-writer with good reading-quality?

Postby Scour on Mon Nov 22, 2004 7:57 pm

Hello!

A friend want to buy a new DVD-writer (he have only a CD-writer). The writer is the only optical drive in his new computer, so the drive must be a very good reader, too. And the CD/DVD-writing-quality is important.

I think it can one of these drives, because I have good experiences with drives from these two:

Pioneer DVR 108
LG GSA 4160

The NEC 3500 is perhaps a good drive, but the NEC-drives are not good for reading.
LiteOn are great readers, but bad writers, so I don´t think that I can recommend it.

So what you think, which drive to get?

Thanks
Benq DW 1640 and 1650 , Plextor PX-755, Pioneer BDR-208 and 209D, LG GH24NSC0, LG BH16NS40 and 16NS55, Liteon ihas 124F and 324F, Pioneer DVR-215 and S21, Samsung SH-224DB and 224GB, and some more

I haven't had any problems with my BenQ DW1620 with reading discs... but when doing my review on the drive, it didn't perform as well as other drives had in the past. LiteON's of course make very good readers, as do Pioneers. So I'm assuming you want a drive that can actually burn the disc with some quality too, so I'd suggest going with the Pioneer DVR-108. The BenQ DW1620 would be my second suggestion.
Punch Cards -> Paper Tape -> Tape Drive -> 8" Floppy Diskette -> 5 1/4" Floppy Diskette -> 3 1/2" "Flippy" Diskette -> CD-R -> DVD±R -> BD-R

Best readers for bad dvd recordables are Pioneer drives.
(100% score on mannipultated test disc's)

So I say Pioneer

From the 3 drives listed in the topic I would say:

Pioneer DVR 108
Benq 1620
LG GSA 4160
