Win 98SE Nero-Ultra NEC3500AG Burn Fail - Please Help

Postby zooman57 on Tue Dec 28, 2004 12:44 am

I just installed a NEC ND-3500 in a Win98SE machine and I am having problems burning DVDs using Nero Ultra. Just after caching of files reports complete I get a message saying the burn process failed at whatever speed (I've tried 4X-12X). I can save the error log but then the software freezes and I have to manually reboot using the reset button. This drive works fine on my brothers Windows 2000 system which has the exact same hardware. I have an AMD XP2600, 2 80GB HDD, 512MB RAM, GF4 Ti4200 display adapter, HPT RAID. I am using Fuji (Made in Japan) DVD-R discs. I have updated Nero with all available from the website. I have run the Nero-cleaner to eliminate previous version files & reinstalled. I have updated the firmware for the NEC 3500 to 2.18. I did recently uninstall Game Drive-could that cause a problem? Thanks you for the help! Mark

Here is the log:

what exactly are you doing with the drive?
trying to burn a DVD Video???
in Win98SE you can't have a file bigger than 2Gig if i'm not mistaken...maybe that's part of the problem?

since your brother's machine is identical hardware but Win2K and no probelms, why don't you upgrade from win98 to 2K or XP ?

Zooman57 there's a lot wrong in the log file, I will let you see...

First I want to let you know when the first 6601 update came out I published my testing on a Win98SE machine, not going the right way under
Win98SE so I got the idea it wasn't for us Win98se users and got back to the 63125 wich burns smoothly and does the same job, less extras !

>WinAspi: File 'Wnaspi32.dll': Ver=4.71 (0001),size=45056bytes, created >8/14/02 3:03:36 PM

you have 2 Wnaspi32.dll files v4.71 and v20174 created on different dates
8/14/02 and 10/26/04

>_NEC DVD_RW ND-3500AG (Target 0, F: Autoinsert On, DMA ?, >Disconnect On, SyncDataXfer Off

DMA is not enabled, and Disconnect On is wrong !(must be connect on)

>Check supported media : Disabled (0)

check supported media must be enabled !

I think you have to give it a try with version 63125, because the 3500AG is really a good burner, or you must indeed upgrade to XP, but I know win98se has its attractive way of use so I advice you to try version 63125 because this is easier than going all the way to another windows !

I still use win98se with Nero 63125 and burned a lot DVD's "+" but the "-"
you can try easy and then find out.
(I also have the update 6603 saved)

good luck, Harry

read here how to enable DMA:

zooman57 I made some mistakes on comments onyour log file, only DMA must be enabled !

For my curiousity and to know if 6603 is better than 6601 I did a NEW testing, and guess what, at my hardware P4(2.66GHz) MSI845PE with IDE Maxtor 7200
- 40GB HDD and Sony 500A DVD burner the 6603 did all fine on burning DVD+R too, here my log file to compare (first Image burning from Sony500a 4x/ then from Image>Sony500a burning 4xDVD+R with WIN98SE):

ANY IDEA> maybe problems with your HardDisk Control Device Driver, do you have your HDD on RAID?

my example: <ESDI_506> HA 0

Nero-versie: 6.6.0.3
Recorder: <SONY DVD RW DRU-500A> Versie: 2.1a - HA 0 TA 0 - 6.6.0.3
Adapter-stuurprogramma:<ESDI_506> HA 0
Drive buffer : 8192kB
Bus Type : default (0) -> ATAPI, detected: ATAPI
CD-ROM: <SONY DVD RW DRU-500A >Versie: 2.1a - HA 0 TA 0 - 6.6.0.3
Adapter-stuurprogramma:<ESDI_506> HA 0

Well I'm almost sure by reading your story over and over again, HPT3xx
that your RAID connection is the problem!
If you can connect your HDD on IDE(ATAPI) that will probably be the solution !

Thanks very very much for the help!

Dodeca: I am trying to burn a large amount of data to DVD however I have also tried burning video to DVD-R and it failed as well. Burning CDs works perfectly-no issues there. I tried burning less than 2 Gig of data to DVD-R but it failed in a similar fashion. Upgrading to XP is a temptation. Don't have the bucks right now. I spent it all on a burner & Nero that claims to be compliant with W98SE (fool that I am #-o )

As for the DMA, I checked the link with instructions but for some reason the checkbox is missing in the NEC ND3500 Properties>Settings tab. All I have is Disconnect (checked), Sync data transfer (unchecked), and Auto Insert Notification (unchecked). Should there be a way to enable this option for my ND3500?

Harware Harry: You noticed two WNaspi files. Do I delete one? I copied the one from the Nero site as per instructiuons to the Nero folder.

As far as the RAID array, I tried disabling the RAID array in the bios. Still have the same problems. My brothers computer has W2K and Nero Ultra installed on a RAID 0 array and this drive works fine for him. On my system, Nero is installed on a single drive.

I am curious to know why there are references to "SCSI" in the log....

Bus Type : default (0) -> SCSI, detected: ?

and

9:23:29 PM #15 Text 0 File Scsicmd.cpp, Line 1612
SCSI timeout (2), 30000ms, CDB Data[hex]: B6 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 1C 00

Also, why is the adapter driver listed as...

Adapter driver: <hpt3xx> HA 0

Doesn't seem right since the hpt3xx is probably associated with the Highpoint RAID driver.

I might consider trying the older version of NERO but it's more fun trying to jam a square peg in a round hole if you know what I mean. I like the challenge! Besides, I purchased the software and burner with the understanding that it was compatible with W98SE.

Thanks!

Mark it is, really !

See my advice, I think it's the RAID too, the NEC drive and 6603 and win98SE is workinmg on my system, the only thing I see is the HPT and the SCSI what you also see now, that's what you have to figure out.

the system is alright, if you can in any way change the configure in your system get rit of this SCSI or HPT driver.

I'm sure Nero is compatible with W98. and it's probably something with RAID (Highpoint driver) that doesn't want to play nice with Nero.

If my hardware was a boat, and my software was all my fishing tackel, it would probably sink! :-?

I'm going to try to get it all working though. I like the challenge.

I tried disabling the Highpoint RCM Device and the RAID controllers under SCSI controllers in Device manager but it didn't help. I tried disabling the RAID in the BIOS so it wouldn't even load but that didn't work. I could try uninstalling or renaming all the associated drivers but I'm not too anxious to do that just yet. I've got most of my gaming aps on the RAID array and don't want to jump through a bunch of hoops everytime i want to use the RAID drive. Thought about creating a partition just to house another OS with Nero and booting to it when I need to burn but I'd still rather scratch my head till I get it to work with my system as it is now. I'll figure it out somehow (famous last words!)

Any idea why can't I see an option for enabling DMA in my DVD drive's settings?

I understand that you will hold the working system together.

To enable DMA, you go to System/DeviceControl/enable the DMA (on the block) if available to you, see pic.
