MadDog (vers. ND-3500A); can I permanently convert to a NEC?

Postby VEFF on Fri Dec 10, 2004 2:52 pm

Can I permanently flash my MadDog 16X DVD burner to
a NEC ND-3500A, like you could with the rebadged LiteOn drives (CyberDrive etc.), so I can simply flash it with subsequent NEC ND-3500A firmwares without using any special (drive check override) tools?
OR
will I always need to use a binflasher (or similar/equivalent tool)
to flash the official NEC firmware into the burner's EEPROM?

I did searches here and at one of the other sites we all know, but couldn't find this specific thread; there were tons of matches for NEC 3500A and MadDog...

Thanks!

Use BinFlash and flash the drive to 2.17 then go to NEC's website and get 2.18 and try it

It will definitively work : with binflash and an original NEC 3500 2.16 firmware you will have a true NEC 3500 fw 2.16 drive.

You will be able to flash to the next 2.18 "exe" firmware from NEC without binflash as a NEC regular user.

Excellent news guys!
Thanks for the info.

I'll give it a shot as soon as I install it.

The OM people forgot to use bubble wrap or other protectant; the drive
was loose in a big shipping box, with nothing at all wrapped around it, except of course the MadDog retail box...

I actually heard a thud when the shipping guy dropped it off; he didn't ring or knock, but I was in the family room and heard it.

I don't think it is worth swapping it out, since you never know what happened to any retail box between production and the time you buy it ; it could drop off a shelf in the store; it could be dropped in the warehouse etc.
It has a 2 year warranty, which is probably a lot longer than I'll keep it anyway...

I have converted it to a NEC.
It has fw 2.18

Now to try some burns.
I have a big headache (hope its not from the fumes from the garage floor epoxy coating that I painted on yesterday), so I may not do any burns tonight.

I am looking forward to using it.
I am taking a long vacation starting next week, so I am sure I can get some play time with the drive - I have yet to even burn one disc so far.

I have a data backup or two that I would like to start with.

Sorry for the question, but what is BinFlash and where is it found? We bought our daughter a MadDog burner for Christmas and would like to use the NEC firmware.

Thanks,
Lon

Bin flash will allow you to erase all the ROM from your drive and replace it with donuts/cake whatever you want.

2.18 is faster for my media and you can flash direct to 2.18 from 2.16. If you have used a doctored FW then you can use bin flash to remove it and flash with 2.18. Italian Job has the link for bin flash. I had to use it for my 2510A. =D>
