Best Buy, Staples, CompUSA Media deals!

Postby Jim on Sat Jan 08, 2005 2:17 pm

Starting tomorrow:

Best Buy has Fuji 100 pack DVD+R for $39.99 and TDK DVD+R/DVD-R 50 packs for $19.99.

Staples has Sony DVD+R and DVD-R 50 packs for $19.94.

CompUSA has Sony DVD+R and DVD-R 100 packs for $39.99.

Likely all the media is 8X by now. The best deals are the Fuji and Sony media if the box says Made in Japan on them.

Any deals on decent quality DVD+RW media?
Speed is unimportant; 2.4X is fine since it is for a DVD recorder, not a PC DVD burner.

I didn't have a DVD recorder yet when CompUSA had 25 packs of Memorex 2.4X DVD+RW for only $9.99 recently!

Thanks!
Burners only:

OfficeMax has Memorex (2.4x pictured) 25 pack DVD+RW for $9.99 tomorrow. CompUSA has Sony DVD+RW 25 pack DVD+RW for $17.99 tomorrow (unknown speed but either RICOH or SONY codes likely).

I bought a 25 pack of the Memorex 2.4x at CompUSA that last time they had the deal and it was Made in India MBIPG101W03. I've been using them as test discs and they seem fine after 5 rewrites in my Pioneer DVR-106/DVR-108. Nothing too scientific and I don't use them much.

Not necessarily, but discs made in Japan are usually better quality.

I will try some of the Sony 8x DVD-R tonight in my DRU-500a and DRU-710a and see how they work. The price was too good and I have to believe that Sony at least matched their own branded drives.

Previously I have mostly use Vertbatim (Ritek rebrand) and Ritex 4x all perfect. I hope I do not pay for deviation.

Just checked the ID on the Sony 8x and it was SONY08D1. I guess that does not mean much.

Going to burn some now.

Hrm... I remember when Sony brand CD-RW drives would fail every time trying to burn Sony CD-RW media.... :o

Ok here are my results:

Sony 8x DVD-R ID=SONY08D1 Made In Taiwan (added later)
Sony DRU-710A drive BYX2 FW
Nero 6.6.0.5 Video Compilation
Playback in PC and Cheap, Old but reliable Toshiba Set Top Player

Burn @ 12x
PC = Good
Set Top Player = Horrible (skips, jitters)

Burn @ 8x
PC = Good
Set Top Player = Bad (a few skips)

Burn @ 4x
PC = Good
Set Top Player = Good

3 out 3 no problem burning and verifying but I would not buy them again. Maybe able to use them for data only DVDs. I am going back to Ritek next time. I might return these to CompUSA or use them a 4x since the price was decent.

arsenal34,

I went to best buy today. The Tdk 8x DVd-r at Best Buy are made in Taiwan.

It will probably be TTG02 media id code. I'm just going by what videohelp dvd media database says. I didn't buy any, so I'm not for sure though.

The Sony come from both Japan and Taiwan. Everyone will have to look at their own store and check the labels to see what they stock.

The SONY08D1 burns outstanding in my Pioneer DVR-108. I've read from a couple sources it is likely produced in Taiyo Yuden's factory.

Taiyo Yuden can't meet their own production needs... and Sony has a perfectly good (albeit small) manufacturing plant in Japan.... why would Taiyo Yuden be making Sony's media?

Thanks I saw the CompUSA deal when searching the ads this Sunday, best I could find for brand name at the moment.

I think the OfficeMax deal may be regional, since my local stores' ads
don't have it
. :(
The closest thing that IS on the web site is 10 packs of 4X Memorex for $19.99

EDIT/UPDATE:
I tried NJ, NY, CA weekly ads for OM and couldn't find this.
Anyone know which areas have it?
Too bad the fee shipping is gone, otherwise I could possibly call and have
them shipped to me.

If you ar a member of Sam's club they carry Verbatim 8x +R & -R for $44 dollars. Probably can find them online cheaper, but it is pretty handy to walk in and pick them up. You can get 160gb drive for $79 as well no rebate required.

Returned my Sony "Made in Taiwan" to CompUSA and bought some of the Verbatim 8x -R (MCC 02RG20). These seem to work much better.

The OfficeMax Memorex sale is in the Detroit area circulars this week.

Here's the link: http://officemax.crossmediaservices.com ... number%3d6

I saw the Sony/Taiyo Yuden connection posted on this forum as well as cdfreaks.com. I don't have time to search for the links right now but they apparently have a joint venture together in Japan that was extrapolated to a media connection.

Thanks.

I just realized it is everywhere!!
For some reason, I thought the ad was only one page this week!
Must be having one of those weeks LOL.

I hope they still have them at my local store!
