4-PIN connector on ATX Supply

What is the use of the 4-PIN connector on ATX Supply? It is supposed to provide 12V to the CPU. My mobo (K7N2G-ILSR) has one. But my board powers up nicely on one of the older supply which does not have this connector, and the OS correctly detects the CPU too.
So what is its real use?

if your motherboard has a connector for the 4-pin cable from the power supply, i suggest you use it.
it's quite possible that the board will run without it, but using it will make the board run more stably. power usage throughout the board will distributed more evenly.

I may be wrong, but I thought that that extra connector supplied P4 processors with the extra voltage required to run ?
