CPU/Ram usage questions?

Postby btiger on Fri Feb 25, 2005 7:08 pm

I got 1G of DDR PC3200 Ram (512MB X 2 in dual channel) with 2.8C and of all the applications I run in my PC, my MAX ram usage was only 325MB (during video editing), however I can see the MAX CPU usage was 90%( also during video editing),so I am making full use of my CPU. That make me think, is it a waste for installing 1 G of Ram if I am only using my PC for video editing?

CPU/Ram usage questions?

Postby PBrecheisen on Fri Feb 25, 2005 7:25 pm

I'd say RAM is very useful for having running several apps at once, for real multitasking.
In my opinion, today we should have at least 1GB of RAM in modern PCs.
I have so with my Barton 2500+ and it feels fine.

I too have a gig, but I'd think you'd be hard pressed not to say 90% of consumers don't run programs that would necessitate more than 512MB. As for video encoding, nearly every program I've played with won't utilize more than 200MB max. Was it a waste to buy a gig? No. Consider yourself a tad bit more future proof. Plus, memory isn't that expensive...

I've noticed a gig of RAM to be kind of the sweet spot to be at. The jump from 512 to 1GB for me was great, loving it.
