How is BTC DRW10161M (16X writer)?

Postby TCAS on Wed Feb 23, 2005 1:11 am

I just bought an I/O Magic 16X DVD writer that happens to be BTC DRW10161M; I have been using NEC-3500A for the last few months with total satisfaction. I will be using the new drive as a second burner, I/O Magic repackage BTC and BenQ, reading many cautious comment from many user of BTC I tend to return this drive and exchange it with BenQ drive if Staples where I bought this drive have it, otherwise return it for good. Does any one have any experience with this drive if so, please let me know your comments. Thanks

from what i've read at other forum sites the BTC drive is quite crappy. return the drive and if you plan on getting another I/O MAGIC make sure you look at the specs on the box. it's a rebadged BENQ 1620 if the specs say DVD+R DUAL LAYER 2.4x speed. if it says 4x DVD+R DUAL LAYER then it is BTC. good luck :)

Thanks DVD_ADICT, I am planing to do exactly that and hopefully getting BenQ if not I may return the drive for refund. But still I am interested to see how other people have experienced using this drive.

Gabe; Thank for the link, after day and half waiting for any realistic fact on BTC 10161M (I/O Magic repackage) drive and reading about other I/O Magic repackage drive (BenQ 1620) with so many negative comments and complaint about BenQ I decided to install the BTC and give it a try. I ripped a D/L Video with DVD Shrink at speed of 4X and wrote the same ripped DVD with 8X did the testing and every was good and promising then played it in my stand alone DVD player and there too worked perfect. This is so far my own experience with this (BTC) drive.

BTW: I used Maxell 8X DVD+R made in Japan for this coping.

Can you tell us the Mediacode? You can read it with DVD Identifier.

forum sites are mostly used for people who have problems with their drives. take a look at the NEC, BTC, PIONEER, PLEXTOR FORUMS at CDFREAKS.COM you will see all brands have their problems or defective drives. BENQ is not the only brand that has quality control problems.

That's right Addict. Ten people complaining doesn't mean that ten dozen aren't satisfied.

10-4, over and out.

I have also tried Teon DVD+R 8X Media Code "CMC MAG E01 which is burn at 8X average time 8-9 second. But there are two factors with this drive that bothers me and therefore being intimidated to return it:

1) The drive has very low reading (ripping) speed function.

2) The drive is not capable to burn good brand name disk at the higher speed of rated for disk.

3) There is no community support for this drive, therefore no hope of hacking the f/w for removing the riplock or changing the writing strategy for speeding the writing above disk rated speed.
