well drives that are speed unlocked to get the fastest rips are over rated, they burn out to quickly

right now im using my nec 3520 to rip and pioneer 108 to burn

Plextor, Plextor, and Plextor some more!

I use the Plextor 712A for ripping and burning: it's a very
versatile drive. The new 716A seems just as good, and
its on its third hardware revision with constant firmware
updates. You can't go wrong buying Plextor products
because they support them!

my pioneer has come through reading disks that my NEC screwed up on

so as far as quality reads, the pioneer is a better drive

Plextor

The Plextor is both: A good reader and a fast reader.
It is also an excellent burner, and of course the
Plextor 716A comes with PlexTools.
Plextools is a utillity to check your disc and set your
write speed. I am still playing with it and I think Plextools
alone justifies the increase in pennies you pay for the
Plextor 716A!

The old Toshiba 1712's were good readers. The Lite-On DVD writers appear to be good, and fast, readers too. I wouldn't use them to burn DVD's but they are cheap enough to buy as a reader. You could then use it for disc quality checks with Kprobe.
