another nature picture - a bird!

Postby dodecahedron on Wed May 04, 2005 7:45 pm

well...it seems this is getting to be a habit.

the wife calls me to come quickly to our bedroom and we see this bird perched on the windowsil.
tried to raise the shutter real quiet to see the whole bird, but of course it was startled and flew away.

what bird is it?
i guess it's a falcon or a buzzard. probably a buzzard - they're smaller i think.
we live in a high building - 8th floor, and all the other houses nearby are 2 floors at the most. so the window ledge is a good spot for such a predator to watch for prey, an excellent view of the surrounding area.

Buzzards are pretty large.. at least around here. I'd say that it's a small hawk.

Nah, that's not a Falcon...THIS is a Falcon, and this is an Eagle! Hope that helps.

Of course, this Blackbird is cooler still :)

Hmm...that's two thread's now that I've interjected on...

That's a pretty bird. After looking at the foot I wonder if it has battle scars or if that's the way they shed their skin?

By the look and feature of that bird, it looks like a pigeon to me. Pigeon will rest and nest real high in buildings and apartments.

I looked at pictures of the one hawk and one falcon I know anything about (red-tailed hawk and peregrine falcon). The talons looked more like the falcon to me, I can't say what breed the markings match. It doesn't look like a buzzard though, it looks like a bird of prey. Buzzards here are larger than hawks or falcons.

i meant
i guess it's a falcon or a hawk. probably a falcon - they're smaller i think

the hebrew word for falcon is 'buzz' hence my mistake #-o
a buzzard is something else. a scavenger, not a bird of prey like hawks, falcons.

extreme, look at those talons! that's defenitely no pigeon.
also, when we raised the shutters it flew away real fast, much quicker than a pigeon.

In my neighborhood, there's a hawk that will sit on top of people's houses, looking for rabbits and such. I was driving home the other day and saw something in the grass next to the sidewalk. I thought it was a dog or something. Nope.. it was the hawk eating a rabbit. I pulled up next to it and it didn't even fly away.

I just look up the difference between a pigeon and a falcon, and pigeon's feet are pinkish, where falcon's feet are yellow. You are correct, this isn't a pigeon. I managed to do some research and I think the bird looks similar or fall in this bird's family:
