Germproof DVD media

Those of you that like to lick your DVD's will probably appreciate Prodisc's Germproof DVD media:

What's up with all of Prodisc's gimmicky media? First their 4.9GB discs and now these germproof things. I just wish they'd improve the quality.

Okay we are jokeing arround about prodisc's latest invention.

However I could understand these from a marketing side.
Because it might be nice under specific conditions in the food industry or health care.
However the problem is that these devisions also require very good media quality and stability something at which prodisc so far hasn't been the best companny.

So Ian is right when he said first focus on quality because now it's just a bad gimmick.

Hrrrm. Well I don't want to see you fall ill *that* much. Probably best not.

But seriously, lets look at this from the outside in. We live in an age of gimmicky CRAP. Half the products I see/touch/throw out of my window within the ODD market, I consider to be nothing more than what is known as "markitecture". One of the most prominent examples of this I can think of, off hand, is the concept of their varying buffer-under-run protection methodologies:

* Justlink
* Truelink
* BURN-proof
* SMART-link
* BURN-rite
* Power-BURN

Give me a frigging break. It is all based upon EXTREMELY similar controller logic, let alone the initial specs for implementation.

Further down the line, things like on the fly pickup calibration:

* PowerREC
* DynaREC
* PowerRecord
* WOPC
* WOPCII ....and finally...
* WSCOPC <-- Wesociety Super Cool Optical Pickup Crushing (He held a gun to my head...told me to add it, I swear!)

...even the mighty Pioneer can be accused of the use of "markitecture" in my books, with their mighty "on the fly geometric feedback mechanisms and LCD-tilt" technology. Granted, they are actually utilising a home-grown concept that other writers do not - but the principles are the same and feedback technology is not anything TOTALLY SUPER-COOL REVOLUTIONARY. -_-

My advice? (maybe its my jaded, cynical nature kicking in, after being at this for YEARS now...) Don't listen to their garbage. Use your own mind. Think for yourself. Probably why I stopped participating on most of the kiddie-forums long ago. Full of utter tosh spit out by people poisoned by a gimmicky world.

It's nice to see you guys still have critical melon's however!

I don't think it gimmick, I believe the idea is to protect data from the interesting affects of microbes growing on CD/DVD media.

If your a Howard Hughes type and keep your discs clean & dry, germs aren't a problem but if you don't or can't, then Germproof media could be a good idea.

Although I don't think that Prodisc adding silver ions (reflective metal) to their media is go to improve their quality.
