Verbatim 4x DVD-RDL to appear in North America SOON!

Postby dolphinius_rex on Tue Jun 07, 2005 2:20 pm

I just thought I'd let everyone know that Verbatim's 4x DVD-RDL media will be arriving in North America at your favourite online vendors soon. I've just been in touch with Verbatim's largest distributor in North America, and the media is on it's way and available for pre-order :D

As for pricing, it's a little more expensive then DVD+RDL from Verbatim, but not much. Of course, this says NOTHING about what it will be sold for at Retail levels.

Meritline has them already:

$23.97 for 3 pack. Not cheap, but its better than when DVD+R DL discs first came out.

I am assuming you get your media in Canada? Is it cheaper there? I'm moving to Japan in about two months, any idea what it will cost there? Thanks.

Yeah, DVD DL media is cheaper in Canada. I'm sure it's cheaper in Japan, but I have no idea how much.

Regular price on Verbatim DVD+RDL is about $7.25 CAD right now. My cost is somewhat cheaper then that... when I buy them.

Is there a list of known DVD-ROM readers or standalones that can read both layers of such discs now ? (not including DVD-R DL burner, too easy  )

I don't know of one...

EDIT:

BTW: since we're talking about DVD-RDL, I thought I might pass on that I've heard Taiyo Yuden is working on DVD-RDL media as well.... but not word yet on DVD+RDL.

Hrm... yeah that's not too informative really. They didn't even show any disc specs for the media used in the compatability testing :o

I mean they haven't shown the quality and statistics of the disc used in the playability tests. It might have huge jitter or beta problems!

C't did report on those and there conclusion was that quite some drives don't expect a second layer on -R booktype.
