Can't play or copy CD-audio discs recorded on Pioneer record

I have audio CD's made on a Pioneer outboard CD recorder (PDR-609). The disks are recordable CD-audio disks. My computer system is a Dell Dimension 8200 running Windows XP Home on an 80531 processor, 1.7 GB. I have a Liteon digital video disk drive, 16x, and a Hitachi read-write drive, 16x. I don’t know the exact model numbers of the drives. The computer is 3.5-years-old. I have previously made digital copies of these CD's on the Dimension, using Disccopy in Roxio or by making a Harddisk CD image in Roxio. Suddenly, I can't play these disks on the computer and I can't copy them. Neither of my drives seems to read them properly using either Windows Media Player or Realaudio Player, and I can't copy the disks in Roxio either. They do play fine on outboard players. My wife’s Dell laptop will read and play the disks, but when I tried to copy a disk on her computer using Roxio Easy CD-Creator, it appeared to work but did not. The copied disk had only clicking sounds. Outboard players play the Pioneer-recorded disks fine.

I can play commercial CD's on my Dell Dimension, as well as noncommercial disks given to me by others. The only ones that the computer won’t play are the ones made on the Pioneer CD recorder. Windows does recognize the CD tracks of these disks. I have also tried playing the disks in RealPlayer and copying them in Windows Media Player on the Dimension, and that did not work.

This seems like a Windows software problem. Thanks in advance for any advice.

have you made any changes to the system - hardware or software - prior to the problem appearing?

if you're not using DirectCD, i would try uninstalling it. packet-writing software (such as DirectCD) is known to cause problems - incompatibilities, instabilities etc. (although i don't know if you can uninstall just DirectCD without uninstalling the rest of the Roxio software).

Yes, I've made changes, too many to recount, probably. The most obvious change was installing Norton Internet Security, I think. I probably added the Napster downloading service since I last used one of these disks on the computer. I had also dowloaded and installed Itunes, which I was not using, so I uninstalled that, which made no difference.

I have Easy CD Creator Platinum 5.0. It looks like I could uninstall and then reinstall it without Direct CD. I can't remove Direct CD selectively. Do you think I should do that?

Well, I did uninstall Easy CD Creator, and that did not solve the problem. I also uninstalled Quicktime.

if you can get rid of DirectCD (and you're not using it) i would recommend trying that.

also, various music programs (Windows Media Player, RealPlayer ???) sometimes have plugins that let them burn music CDs. these plugins sometimes play havoc with burning programs and mess things up.
do you have such burning plugins?
alas, even if you do remove these programs, sometimes they still leaev traces behind (registry, drivers) so uninstalling them doesn't always solve the problems.

if all else fails, you can try reinstalling windows and then installing only Nero or Easy Media Creator (without DirectCD if possible) and see if your CDs can be read.
i know reinstalling Windows is a pain, but short of that i'm out of suggestions.

Yes, I was coming to the same conclusion. And I may start over when it is less critical that the computer be generally working. It's probably a good idea.

First I'm going to try the selective startup routines.

1. Remove the optical drives + the IDE channel they're connected to from Device Manager and restart the system.

2. If Exact Audio Copy fails, I'd reinstall Windows.
