New Averatec laptop with dual layer burner...need info?

Postby aristottle on Sat Aug 06, 2005 8:31 pm

Hi guys I just bought a nice compact laptop...an averatec 3300 series with a 60 gig hard drive and 512 megs of ram and dual layer burner.

I tried burning a single layer 8x benq media...but it would only burn at 4x?

How can I find out what the brand of the dvd burner is or if there is any new firmware for it? I checked Averatecs site and it doesn't say anything about the burner?

I checked Neros info tool and it says "Slimtype DVDRW SOSW-852S"

Anyone have any info...who makes it etc?

Its a LiteOn
http://www.liteonamericas.com/us/DVDRW_SOSW852S.htm

From their site:

NOTE: This is a system integrator product. Due to compatibility concerns, which may cause drive failure, we are not able to provide any firmware upgrade for this product. For technical support, kindly contact your vendor.

Thanks....I had found info suggesting it was Sony as well as Lite On?

BTW...my burner has the PSD1 firmware.

So it doesn't look good for upgrading the firmware?

Ah yes... that drive. Lite-On sent us one of those to review during the fall of last year. The damn thing would not write to any DVD+R media at 8x. After dumping out the media list, you could see that it didn't support ANY media at that speed. The drive was like this until about March of this year when Lite-On finally released a firmware update.

The moral of the story? Update the firmware and pray that your media is actually supported by the drive.

I have been trying to find firmware updates for it...but I have not been successful....could someone kindly post a link?

I thought it was pretty darn cool to have a dvd burner in such a tiny laptop  ....I backed up a movie already with it using shrink....worked fine...with the noted problem that it would only burn the 8x benq media at 4x.

OK...thanks Ian for the link....now...I have never flashed a DVD burner before in a laptop.....what could possibly go wrong? Or am I just being overly paranoid....the laptop is only 3 days old and would rather not kill the new drive...lol ANY ADVICE????

From what I can tell the Sony DW-D56A is the same drive as the LiteON.....is this indeed the case?

Well I was feeling brave so I went ahead and flashed it...it worked fine...so the firmware is now PSX3.

I noticed Sony has a new version called PFS2.....has anyone tried that?

Have a look at the codeguys' home page for anything relating to LiteOn (and Sony) firmware: http://codeguys.rpc1.org/index.html

In addition to some marvelous tools (e.g. Omnipatcher), there is a comprehensive collection of firmware and information re. rebadging.

They have a yet newer Sony firmware for this drive (PFS3). Normally it's best to use the newest fw compatible with your hardware.

thanks for the thread....I have again updated the firmware on my burner to the newest sony version. Sadly it still burns my 8x benq media at 4x (shows as daxon).

Thanks for the help guys.....it was appreciated.
