Benq vs Pioneer

Postby tony_g on Mon Aug 08, 2005 7:25 pm

Currently I own a Pioneer A109 and love it. I need a burner for my other system. I am interested in the Benq 1640, pioneer 109 oem, nec 3520, nec3540 and plextor 740..

I only burn genuine TYG02. I plan on buring at 4 - 8x (i'll test em at 4, 6 and 8 and see which is best.) Speed is not important QUALITY is.

My a109 gives me Pi avg of .4 with peaks of 8 and very low beta jitter (i tested with my 105 untill it died and my buddies 716.) are these numbers realistic for an oem 109?

Could I get good as or better with 1640 or nec3520/3540?

Should i wait for Ians 1640 review before buying?

I have been told Plextor + TY = GREAT QUALITY.
Should I look at the 740 instead of a 1640 or just crossflash a 1640 or not bother because it does not matter?

My system is an intel based system so compatibilty issuses should not be a concern (eg nforce drivers and benq problems)...right?

Dolphinius_Rex is doing the upcoming BenQ review.
I have the 1640 and I have had low PIE/PIF when using DVD+R(CMC E01 & TY T02).The general consensus is the BenQ does better on DVD+R but hopefully the next fw version improves DVD-R.

The 109/A09 performs quite excellently with TYG03 burned at 16x. Why not use the power of that 16x burner you've got there? I certainly plan on getting some for my A09XLC. TYG02 at 8x is really good too, so not much point in lowering the speed to 4x IMO.

LOL burninfool I was thinkin Dolphin but I my hands typed IAN :> Guess it was a brain fart.

Gen-An, TYG03 (actually just about all 16x pure cav media) and the 109 do not like each other at 16x, while I have never experieenced the problem, many people have had em were they do not want to do the lead out properly....we are all hoping Pioneer fixes it in a fw release...but most likely the fw release is called Pioneer A110 ;>

As for 4/6/8x I'll plan on testing and seeing which gives the best results (a buddy of mine has a Plextor 716...which I envy but dont think is worth the money)....after all lower b/j and pi/pie (usually) means longer life.

The only use of these burners is for long(ish) data backups....and the idea of pushing 4gbs of data across my network every week...well lets just say i'd rather spend the bucks on another burner :>

Is their any ETA on the 1640 review?

I have run into the CAV problem a few times with my A09...there seems to be no rhyme or reason to it. Hopefully a firmware release will fix it. The 1640 seems to be a good burner; go for it!

buy the pioneer 110. :) get a referral from someone for shop4tech (I can give you an idea of a guy) 10% off and use a coupon code CS10 for another 10% off and free shipping. about $50 shipped. It has DVD-RAM too. Its not the neutered version. I love pioneers myself I am just out of space at the moment for another burner or else I'd buy the 110 myself and I have the NEC 3540 and Benq 1340.(plus a few pioneers)

Yeah, someone posted that link the other day. I wish the guy would have tested more 16x media.

He tested what I have 200 of the TY 16X G03 so I was happy to see that considering most drives suck on that media.

Well, Pioneer tends to be biased toward -R, so the only significant 16x -R I can think of he left out was MXL RG04, keeping in mind Pioneer burners also tend to be biased toward Japanese-developed -Rs.
