About DDR2 and SATA-2

Postby bimbla on Thu Aug 11, 2005 9:20 am

Can I use DDR-2 on DDR mobo?

On similar lines, Can I replace SATA HDD by SATA-2 HDD for performance gain?

Pardon my ignorance.

Thanks and regards,

bimbla.

re SATA: if your motherboard/controller card has a SATA controller, you'll be able to connect to it a SATA2 hard drive, but you won't benefit from the newer features of SATA2. as far as the speed goes, SATA is fast enough, current desktop hard drives aren't fast enough to reach the limit of SATA.

Nope, it simply won't fit!

BUT, you can get faster DDR memory, look for latencies like 2-2-2 :D

eVGA NF4 SLI mobo
Opteron 165 Dual Core 1MB cache @ 2.5ghz
2GB Mushkin DDR PC4000
2x160GB & 1x250GB 7,200RPM SATA w/NCQ
eVGA Geforce 7900 GTO 512MB PCI-e
Pioneer 111D 16x DVD burner

These are both 2-2-2.

Do you know what speed you MB supports (ie. DDR400)?

DDR-2

Postby bimbla on Fri Aug 12, 2005 9:06 am

I have MSI RS-480M2-IL, Athlon 64 3000 and Corsair 2X512 DDR400

I got my RAM from NewEgg for $84+ shipping + courier to India. It totaled to around Rs. 4500/-

Will the 2-2-2 make any significant difference over my existing memory?

I am planning to switch to C51PV based mobo as soon as it is available.
That will, I hope, accomodate these new features.

Thanks and regards.

You bios should tell you what your current latencies are. Does newegg still sell that ram, post a link to it.

The memory I have is Corsair VS1GBKIT400. It has a CAS latency of 3. It is CL3.

Give a search for VS1GBKLIT on shopping.com to get the list.

newegg does list them as CL2.5.

pcworld did some basic tests and said the gains are negligable #-o
http://www.pcworld.com/news/article/0,aid,118372,00.asp

Hard drives on the other hand are a bottleneck :) maybe get a pair of SATA-II drives and run them in raid!

The applicaton softwares run very fast. But windows start-up and shutdown is slow.
By any chance, does this have to do with XP Antispy?

Thank and regards,

bimbla.

well you can take a look at the articles here: www.tweakxp.com two small things that can help is turning off the windows startup and shutdown music (just as an example).

Also, look into a program call hijackthis, it allows you to easily stop certain (unnecessary) programs from launching. for example adobe acrobat reader has some stupid plugin that loads. there are certain programs that I know I don't need running in the background, so I shut them down permanently, but the program is still fully functional if launched drectly.

All okay dude, thanks for the kind thoughts! Curious: How did you courier it to India? Someone you know in the States?
