How is the 5239S?

Burn baby burn!

Postby SkaarjMaster on Fri Aug 12, 2005 1:04 pm

I'm leaning toward the Lite-On right now, I just wanted to make sure I've lessened my chances of it failing in a few months. One more question and I should be set. I just got my 16P9S recently, so I haven't had a chance to use it that much. Is the 5239S mechanism better than the 5238S mechanism?

I'm probably ordering something today or tomorrow.

Hehe, something funny. I'm sitting at my Mom's computer right now and she has the 5237S! I forgot I got it for her when her old burner went out. 8) I think the 52X burner on my old machine in my sig is the 5224??? or something like that....I'll check when I get home tomorrow night.

good.
so now you can do a thorough comparison with extended testing and tell us how the new Lite-On 5239S fares against the older 52327S and maybe even the 52246S.

Is it OK to hook this up as a Slave to a 52X CD-ROM or should I make the burner the Master? Of course, this is at work, so don't pay attention to my sig for this question.

By the way, I'm not sure if I have a 52246S in my old system or not but as soon as I remember I'll check and then modify my sig slightly for my old system.

I had over 20 CD-RW-drives, only a Mitsumi made problems in slave.

But I had a Cyberdrive CW 058D who made problems when the other drive on the same cable was a Pioneer-drive; the Pioneer shows errors when reading media.

The 9S tray mechanism is slower, smoother and significantly more quiet than the 8S one. The 9S tray doesn't feel as cheap as its older brother.

EDIT: my 9S drive is a DVDROM, 8S is CDRW drive

Oh, I just noticed the other question and no effects from Katrina at all here in Tampa. :D

i only just noticed:
the SOHR-5239S and 5239V models have only 1.5MB buffer !!! :o :x
vs. the 2MB of the older models.

http://www.liteonit.com/ODD/English/e_p ... r5239s.asp
http://www.liteonit.com/ODD/English/e_p ... r5239v.asp

what's up with that ???
anyone who's got one of the 5239S models can you check what Nero or some other program reports ?

code64K, any info on this ?

edit: really weird, in the cdfreaks review of the 5238S it had 2MB buffer.

Hello!

Some drives uses the buffer for the FW like: 2MB - 512KB(FW)= 1,5 MB

Scour is right.

I have a LG GCE-8527B which I thought had 2 MB buffer. But actually it only has 1536 Kb buffer.I had read somwhere that the firmware shares some buffer memory, though not always.

Guess companies are finding new ways to cut costs. I noticed that the newer combo drives had dropped to 1.5 MB and the DVD-ROM drives had dropped to 256 KB (DVD-writers are unchanged; guess dropping it to 1 MB would've been too much), but I never knew why until now. Thanks! :)

that's the way things are done for harddrives as well, but manufacturers always advertise the full size without deducting space for firmware usage

it would seem that the newer Liteon drives really have only 1.5MB cache. The retail Sony CRX-230AE (crx230ee) states 1.5MB on the box as well.

I dont think that HDD firmware shares the normal buffer memory of the HDD.The buffer memory is a normal SD-RAM chip, that can be used as buffer.

i remember seeing mention of this in the spec sheets of some old IBM Deskstars. The buffer memory on CD/DVD drives seems to be SDRAM as well.

Probably it means that the firmware will be loaded into the buffer (SDRAM) during operation, leaving the rest for actual data caching?

some discussion here was about the LTR-52327S and it was getting too much off-topic for this thread, so i moved it to a new one.

My CD-Rs become older and so I´m looking for a CD-RW-drive that´s good for scanning CD-R.

What experiences u have about the 5239V? Not many CD-RW-drives are avaible here
