sempron 2200+ v/s celeron 2.2ghz

ok, i was at a local computer store this weekend and i saw a sempron 2200+ w/motherboard for $55.00 and celeron 2.2ghz w/motherboard for $70.00 they were both on clearance. i really don't know who made the motherboards but they both had onboard everything except the sempron w/board had a AGP slot and the celeronw/board did not have any AGP slots.

is the celeron that much better or is it worth getting the sempron? i am on a very tight budget and i am putting the computer together for my wife who only plays online games. i don't want her jacking up mine anymore.

I'd get the AMD. Here are the top 5 reasons:

1: Price.

2: Price.

3: Price.

4: A wee bit more flexibility with option to upgrade with an AGP card. But if she's just going to do simple stuff like online games (or word processing, Internet, etc.), then this is probably a moot point.

5: Performance should be about equal for the two. But unless she's a 3D gamer (which I assume not) or using the system for serious data crunching (heavy duty image editing, scientific / engineering computing, etc.), the kinds of speeds that you're looking at are already much more than enough, which would render any differences un-noticible--so basically, this, too, is a moot point.

i don't know exactly what the differences performance-wise are between these 2 processor, but most likely for what she needs it makes no difference at all. save those $15.

Not enough information. Processor is important, but motherboard even more so. That AGP slot mainboard could be crap; so could the Intel board. Brand and model number of each mainboard would help us, as cheap boards tend to have a much higher potential for stability issues and/or early failure due to substandard capacitors, funky chipsets with wierd drivers, or other issues due to poorer quality control.

Either CPU is useful for the right tasks, but you want to back it up with a good board. For my wife, I found a micro-ATX i865 chipset MSI mainboard with AGP plus onboard ethernet and sound. It was a new-old-stock Socket 370 board and I stuck a 1.13GHz Tualatin Pentium 3 in it, 512MB of PC133 RAM, and a Radeon 8500LE video card. It does what she needs for a great price, and I still have a reliable board in her system that I know will last.

You sure it isn't an i845? 865 chipsets are for the P4 only, IIRC.

The 865/875 will run any S478 CPU...P4 or Celey...

Heck, even the 955s will run Celerons. Why you would want to drop a sub-$100 CPU into a $250+ mobo is beyond me, though...

ASUS K8S-MX and Sempron 2500 (64-bit) would make one hell of a budget combo.
Just find the price for the same.

The past few computers that I've bought for myself or others have been find-the-cheapest available parts and get them. Maybe it's because I never do anything fancy (mostly just text stuff, like web, e-mail, and programming; kept the onboard video because I don't do any 3D gaming) or maybe I just got very lucky, but even the cheapest of the cheap worked fine. All my friends recommended that I get something better but that was still "budget" (like a budget video card), but doing that jacked up the price, and I'm mizerly, so I went ahead and just got the cheapest of the cheap. I'm picky when it comes to the security of my data (i.e., HDD or optical drives/media), but for other hardware, if it runs, I'm happy.
